It's likely that more than
77 people of 7,000 in the
Goderich area will have a
car stolen from their
household this year.
How big is the !halm? In
1981 there were 93,436 motor
vehicles stolen in Canada.
That's an average of one car

stolen from every 90 Cana-
dian households — or 7 cars
stolen from approximately
7,000 households in the
Goderich area.
If you left your car unlock-
ed today, be thankful if it is
still there. Car theft is a ma-
jor crime in our country to-
day and it is safe to say that
many stolen car incidents
could be avoided with just a
few seconds of thought by
the owner.
Who pays for this loss?
You do in the form of in-
creasing automobile
premiums.
Police break car theft
down into three main
categories: joy riding, quick
transportation, and organiz-
ed theft rings. While
automobile manufacturers
continue to "build in"
features to outsmart
thieves, police say that if a
skilled thief really wants
your car, then he'll usually
get it.

Pee wees to get drug preverji
This fall when 50,000
peewee hockey players
register for teams, they will
receive a timely drug
prevention kit too.
The kits, produced by
Alcohol and Drug Concerns,
Inc., are being supplied free
to the OMHA, the OWHA, the
SHA and NOHA for distribu-
tion.
There are four items in a
small plastic bag labelled:
"Get High On Hockey". The
pamphlets are designed to
attract kids and encourage
them to choose a healthy
lifestyle. There is a colourful
comic book which depicts
two cartoon characters who
are Confronted with the
chance ,to try. drugs, also a
drug „foot quiz to be com-
pletgk by players and their
parents; in another pam-
phlet, Jim McKenny, an ex -
Maple Leaf, tells his story,
and the lifestyle booklet
completes the kit.
The 11 and 12 -year-old age
group was selected because
most of them are not using
drugs yet. Early prevention
efforts can help influeace
their decision before they get
r
to the age of experimenta-
tion, usually 14 and 15:
AlcOhal and Drug Ciiii-
cerns, Inc., has not singled
out hockey because they
have more drug problems
than any other sport. Hockey
reaches so many children
that it seems the ideal route
to send thekitS.
