Senior Vikings defeat Sarnia St. Clair Colts
Exhibition
game held
BYTD
The GDCI senior Vikings defeated the
Sarnia St. Clair Colts 17-6 in pre -season
exhibition football here Friday.
The Viking offence was strong in the
first half but slowed down noticeably in the
second half.
First quarter touchdowns by Kevin
Beattie and John McGraw, both converted
by Joe Melady, put the Vikings on top to
stay. There was no scoring in the second
quarter and the teams battled on even
terms in the third quarter with Melady's 20
yard field goal representing the only points
scored.
The Colts hit pay dirt in the final quarter
when Craig McLean scored a touchdown
on a two yard dive.
The Viking offence showed a good
balance between running and passing.
Quarterback John Thompson threw the
ball well and had several good receivers as
targets.
Defensively, the Vikings showed
strength along the line and at the
linebacker positions.
Coach Ray Donnelly and Chris Connor
see the need to work with their young
defensive backs and corners, but feel they
have the personnel to do the job.
The Vikings get their first -luron-Perth
Conference test here Thursday when they
host the always tough Listowel Lords
following the junior game which starts at
1:30 p.m.

over Sarnia St. Clair
BY TD
The GDCI junior Vikings scored a
convincing 34-0 shutout victory over the
Sarnia St. Clair Colts in pre -season
exhibition football action here Friday.
The Vikings served notice early that
they had come to play. Rob Gibbons
returned the opening kickoff for an ap-
parent touchdown which was nullified by a
clipping penalty. On their next possession
the Vikings drove downfield and Kevin
Talbot took the ball over from the six yard
line for a touchdown. Rob Gibbons added a
two-point conversion on a five yard sweep.
Gibbons scored two touchdowns in the
second quarter on runs of 12 and 16 yards.
Kevin Talbot ran a five yard trap play for
a two point conversion of Gibbon's first
major.
Quarterback Grant Lounsbury went
over on a four yard keeper in the third
quarter and Kevin Talbot scored on a five
yard broken play in the fourth quarter to
round out the Viking scoring attack.
The Viking offensive line was a big
factor in controlling the game. Centred by
Kevin Telford, with Todd Jeffrey and Scott
Stokes at guard, Darryl Black and Chris
Smith at tackle and Darren Doak and
Dave Almasi at end, the Viking line
combines size and speed.
The Viking defense never allowed the
Sarnia attack to get on track. Scott Stokes
recovered a fumble and Dave Almasi had
an interception to lead the way defensively
for the Vikings. Two of the Goderich touch-
downs came directly as a result of
defensive plays. The only Sarnia first
downs came as a result of penalties.
Vikings' coaches Bill Garow and Bruce
Baker hope to cut down on their team's
penalty total in the regular season opener
here Thursday against Listowel.

Goderich Industrial Fastball League for
the second year in a row by sweeping
French Cleaners in the semi-finals three
games to none.
Rob Plunkett fired a three -hitter and
struck out 12 batters to lead Bedford to a 3-
0 win in game one. Brian Sowerby gave
Bedford all the runs they needed with a
solo home run in the fifth inning. Bedford
then added a couple of unearned runs in
the sixth.
In game two, Plunkett fired another
three -hitter and struck out 16 batters to
win 2-1. Glen Faikiner and Brian Johnston
led Bedford offensively with a pair of hits
each. The lone French run came off a last
inning home run from Bob Johnston.
Bedford eliminated French by winning
game three 443. Bedford scored the winn-
ing run in the bottom of the seventh when
Rob Plunkett tripled with one out and
scored on an error. Jim Martin of French
and Brian Sowerby of Bedford led all hit-
ters with two hits.

The 1983 slowpitch season appears to be cancelled due to field conditions, but
ending on almost the same note as it should Renegades win this game, it will
started. The Bears are number one and the produce a three-way tie for first place

ly one division has been decided. If that occurs, a mini Round Robin series
between those three teams will take place.
The game between Renegades and Cedar
Lodge will be scheduled at the rep
meeting. Emotions are running high
between the two teams and an interesting
game should develop out of it.
Details will be available in next week's
paper.
At the league level, there is still time to
get your tickets for the year end din-
ner/dance scheduled for September 30.

your spot.
The battle of the year boiled down to the
seventh inning on Sunday as the Bears and
Bulldogs were tied 8-8. With one inning to
go in the season, the Bears scored four
runs and the Bulldogs none. That's how
close it was.
Members of the championship Bear
team include John Anderson, Glen
Schwartz, John MacDonald, Brian Thomp-
son, Mike Lajeunesse, Dan Duncan, Brian
Reeve, Dave Graf, Bill Wedlock, Clare
Charron, Ed Mannering, Ron Ritchie,
Gerry Denomme, Gary Kloepfer, Dave

and Ken Duncan.
The Bears went undefeated in 30 league
and play-off games and that is quite an ac-
" complishment. It has not been done before
and may not be again for quite some time.
The 1983 Goderich Bears are a first class
outfit.
Let us not forget their opponents, the
Port Albert Bulldogs — another powerful
force in slowpitch. Coached by Reg Good,
they are a well disciplined, highly skilled
ball club. Only the Bears have been able to
defeat them on a regular basis _ and that
is no disgrace! They have performed well
in tournament play and in the minds of
many are champions! Congratulations on
an excellent season, Bulldogs.
In "C" Division, Carlow defeated Sifto
12-3 to jump into a first place tie with
Meneset and force a sudden death cham-
pionship game to be scheduled at Mon-
day's team rep meeting.
This should be quite a game and the
results will be published next week.
"B" Division still finds the closest race
going.
