The Viking offence was strong in the first half but slowed down noticeably in the second half. First quarter touchdowns by Kevin Beattie and John McGraw, both converted by Joe Melady, put the Vikings on top to stay. There was no scoring in the second quarter and the teams battled on even terms in the third quarter with Melady's 20 yard field goal representing the only points scored. The Colts hit pay dirt in the final quarter when Craig McLean scored a touchdown on a two yard dive. The Viking offence showed a good balance between running and passing. Quarterback John Thompson threw the ball well and had several good receivers as targets. Defensively, the Vikings showed strength along the line and at the linebacker positions. Coach Ray Donnelly and Chris Connor see the need to work with their young defensive backs and corners, but feel they have the personnel to do the job. Even though it rained heavily during Junior Vikings score convincing 34-0 victory over Sarnia St. Clair BY TD The GDCI junior Vikings scored a convincing 34-0 shutout victory over the Sarnia St. Clair Colts in pre -season exhibition football action here Friday. The Vikings served notice early that they had come to play. Rob Gibbons returned the opening kickoff for an ap- parent touchdown which was nullified by a clipping penalty. On their next possession the Vikings drove downfield and Kevin Talbot took the ball over from the six yard line for a touchdown. Rob Gibbons added a two-point conversion on a five yard sweep. Gibbons scored two touchdowns in the second quarter on runs of 12 and 16 yards. Kevin Talbot ran a five yard trap play for a two point conversion of Gibbon's first major. Quarterback Grant Lounsbury went over on a four yard keeper in the third quarter and Kevin Talbot scored on a five yard broken play in the fourth quarter to round out the Viking scoring attack. The Viking offensive line was a big factor in controlling the game. Centred by Kevin Telford, with Todd Jeffrey and Scott Stokes at guard, Darryl Black and Chris Smith at tackle and Darren Doak and Dave Almasi at end, the Viking line combines size and speed. The Viking defense never allowed the Sarnia attack to get on track. Scott Stokes recovered a fumble and Dave Almasi had an interception to lead the way defensively for the Vikings. Two of the Goderich touch- downs came directly as a result of defensive plays. The only Sarnia first downs came as a result of penalties. Vikings' coaches Bill Garow and Bruce Baker hope to cut down on their team's penalty total in the regular season opener here Thursday against Listowel. the night and most of the morning, the field at GDCI was in good shape. (Photo by Joanne Buchanan) Sarnia St. Pat's win GDCI basketball tournament BY TD The Sarnia St. Pat's Fighting Irish won the GDCI senior girls' basketball tour- nament here Saturday, defeating Hamilton St. Jean de Brebeuf 80-30 in the title game. The Sarnia squad crushed Stratford Central 90-20 in their opening round game and hammered Owen Sound West Hill 79-23 in the semi-final. The Goderich Vikings won the con- solation title, defeating London Medway 50-39'. Mary O'Neill, with 16 points and Chris Stapleton, with 14, led the Viking attack. Kim Fritzley had 11 points, Allison Graham added seven and Mary Beth Alexander had two points. The Vikings were relegated to the consolation round by a tough 46-44 set back in their first game against Grey - Highlands, despite a 25 point effort by Kim Fritzley. The Vikings reached the con- solation final with a 48-42 win over London Lucas. Fritzley and Stapleton had 14 points each to pace the Vikings. Allison Graham had 11 points, Mary O'Neill hooped three, Cathy Gallow and Mary Beth Alexander had two apiece and Anne Anne Allan had one point. The Viking's Kim Fritzley was selected for the tournament all-star team along with Sue Forsyth and Mauren McWilliam from St. Pat's, Carla Jankowski of Brebeuf and Colleen Kennedy from Medway. Bedford reaches finals Hotel Bedford reached the finals of the Goderich Industrial Fastball League for the second year in a row by sweeping French Cleaners in the semi-finals three games to none. Rob Plunkett fired a three -hitter and struck out 12 batters to lead Bedford to a 3- 0 win in game one. Brian Sowerby gave Bedford all the runs they needed with a solo home run in the fifth inning. Bedford then added a couple of unearned runs in the sixth. In game two, Plunkett fired another three -hitter and struck out 16 batters to win 2-1. Glen Faikiner and Brian Johnston led Bedford offensively with a pair of hits each. The lone French run came off a last inning home run from Bob Johnston. Bedford eliminated French by winning game three 443. Bedford scored the winn- ing run in the bottom of the seventh when Rob Plunkett tripled with one out and scored on an error. Jim Martin of French and Brian Sowerby of Bedford led all hit- ters with two hits. Bedford's opponent in the final is unknown as of now, but Lakeport Advertis- ing leads Kirkey's Kar Kare two games to none and had an opportunity to wrap tip the series last Monday. The opening game was all Lakeport as they won 7-0. Simon Langlois fired a three - hitter for Lakeport. Offensively, Larry McCabe led the way with three hits and three RBIs. Jim Fritzley had three hits also. Lakeport then won game two 5-2 despite being outhit 9.4 by Kirkey's. Arnie Parker led the way with two of the hits and three RBIs for Lakeport. With one inning to go in the season, the Bears scored four runs and the Bulldogs none. That's how close it was. The Bears went undefeated in 30 league and play-off games and that is quite an ac- " complishment. It has not been done before and may not be again for quite some time. The 1983 Goderich Bears are a first class outfit. Let us not forget their opponents, the Port Albert Bulldogs — another powerful force in slowpitch. Coached by Reg Good, they are a well disciplined, highly skilled ball club. Only the Bears have been able to defeat them on a regular basis _ and that is no disgrace! They have performed well in tournament play and in the minds of many are champions! Congratulations on an excellent season, Bulldogs. In "C" Division, Carlow defeated Sifto 12-3 to jump into a first place tie with Meneset and force a sudden death cham- pionship game to be scheduled at Mon- day's team rep meeting.
