Egg price
increase
reviewed
The price farmers receive
for eggs was to have gone up
four cents a dozen last Mon-
day, September 6 This price
increase was caused by
higher on-farm costs.
The Canadian Egg
Marketing Agency did im-
plement only two cents of the
increase effective Monday,
September 12. Any further
increase will be postponed
until reviewed by the federal
Cabinet committee on the six
and five program. This com-
mittee is expected to meet
upon the return from Latin
America of federal minister
Eugene Whelan.
Farm price for feed
represents the largest factor
in the government approved
formula used to establish the
price farmers receive for
eggs. American crop reduc-
tion programs, and weather
conditions in most of the
Canadian and U.S. grain
growing areas this summer,
have increased dramatically
the price Canadian farmers
pay for feed. The cost of pro-
duction formula is designed
to reflect increased farm
costs for feed and other fac-
tors. As farm costs go up,
producer prices follow.
The federal program was
instituted on June 18, 1982. At
that point Canadian pro-
ducers received 86.9 cents
per dozen for their produc-
tion. the first anniversary
of the Ix and five program -
June 28, 1983 - farmers were
receiving ii: .1 cents per
dozen. (National weighted
price to producers 'for all
sizes as reported by
Agriculture Canada.) This
represents an increase of 1.4
percent. Since June 28, 1983,
producer prices have in-
creased by 1 -10th of a per-
cent.
Approval of the federal
restraint committee would
see prompt implementation
of the additional two cents,
Producers face a five per-
cent quota cut in .January
1984, and a one cent per
dozen levy increase in
November 1983.
Producer prices are based
on a government monitored
cost of production formula .
