GODERICH, ONTARIO, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1983
SECOND SECTION
Domtar tournament held here
Goderich teams end up facing each other in the final
Goderich had their bats swinging during
the Fifth Annual Domtar Tournament held
at Agricultural Park on Saturday.
Goderich, who had 'two teams in the
tournament, also had two teams in the
finals.
Goderich One, the team who had played
in the tournament last year, was defeated
by Goderich Two by a score of 3-1.
According to Simon Langlois, one of the
main organizers, they had so many men
want to play this year that they had to
make two teams. All players had to be
Domtar employees.
To start the tournament off, Goderich
Two met Beachville, very easily taking an
11-1 victory.
Beachville took the lead in the first inning
when Gord Connan reached home on a
double by Tom Walsh, but the rest of the
game was all Goderich.
With Rick Pettipas on base, Larry
Gaynor hit a homerun, followed by runs
scored by Barney Purser and Bob Morden.
The following inning saw Dale Duncan,
Rick Sowerby and Pettipas score one run
apiece to widen their lead to 7-1.
Dale Duncan, Neil Bieman and Leon
Gaynor reached home while Dwight
Williams scored one more run in the fifth.
The game was stopped at this point
because of the 10 run mercy rule, giving
Goderich Two the victory.
Goderich Two's next game was against
Trenton, with all the scoring coming in the
seventh inning. Goderich won 3-2.
After six innings of defensive battling,
the game picked up with Trenton scoring
two runs. Jerry Denome, was put in the
game for Goderich, and got on base as the
next batter, Duncan, following his
example. But it was Pettipas who drove
the two runs in, and won the game by
steeling home.
With this win, Goderich Two advanced to
the finals.
Goderich One was also succesful in their
first two games, defeating Caledonia 7-3
and Leaside 7-1.
Goderich took a quick 1-0 lead in the first
innning when pitcher Simon Langlois hit a
single and then was brought home by
Dennis Williamsons ground ball. No other
runs were scored until the fourth inning
when Caledonia's centre -fielder hit a
homerun to even the score, But Goderich
came right back with Williamson's triple,
followed by Greg Beacon's homerun.
Goderich finished up the scoring in the
sixth inning when Williamson and Beacon
hit singles and Wally Pierson walked. Ken
Bowen hit a triple, driving in three RBI's.
Mike Lajeunesse scored the final run for
Goderich.
Simon Langlois had 10 strick-outs.
In Goderich's game against Leaside, it
was Leaside opening the scoring in the
first inning after Goderich left two men on
base during their half of the inning.
However, one run was all that Leaside was
to score as Goderich had three runs in the
third, three runs in the fourth and one run
in the fifth, making the final score 7-1.
The championship game was great for
the home crowd as it was Goderich One
facing Goderich Two. The eventual winner
was Goderich Two by a 3-1 score.
The game started out very close with
both teams having two hits and scoring one
run in the first inning. The second inning
saw a pitchers duel with three up and three
down for both teams.
In the third inning Langlois made it to first
for Goderich One but was left, right there.
It was in the sixth inning that all of the
damage was done to the Goderich One
team, as Goderich Two got three hits.
Scoring one each was Pettipas and Neil
Bieman. Left on base was Rick Duck-
worth.
Langlois had a total of 12 strick-outs
while Sowerby had eight.
After the dinner was completed, awards
were handed out to some of the more
valuable players in the Domtar tour-
nament.
Most Valuable Batter went to Rodger
McAdams of Trenton; Most Valuable
Player went to Rick Sowerby of Goderich
Two; the Consolation Champions were
Beachville. The trophies were presented
by Jack Brady, mine manager, and Jack
Trebish, evaperator plant manager.

Students at Karate School get a work out
Round -house kicks, thrusts, sound ef-
fects, all the regular motions and noises
that you would expect to find at a karate
competition were present at the Pierson
Karate School, held in the Goderich
Township Hall.
Instructor Ron Tyndall, who has a first
degree black belt, takes the enthusiast
through rigorous drills, helping them get
the techniques down pat.
Already this year, Tyndall has taken the
group to two competitions, and will be
taking them to two more before the end of
the year. The next one will be October 1 in
Hamilton.
After the group workout, they hold
fights. During these fights, no facial
contact is allowed. Anyone hitting their
opponent in the face, is forced to do 50
pushups. However, there can be 25 per
cent contact to the body, and the white
belts can hit the coloured belts.
Starting on September 12, Tyndall will
be holding a set of classes for men and
women and children 10 -years -old and over.
These classes will be held for 10 weeks.
Starting time is 7:30 p.m. with no previous
experience needed.

Getting all the practise in that they can are the football players at GDCI. Here they're
practising blocking techniques so they'll be ready to go on Friday. ( photo by Anne Narejko)
Get ready for football
It's that time of year again. Time to head
towards the football fields and watch as
the players battle to become the cham-
pions.
Last year it was GDCI's senior team that
took the championship, while the junior
team went undefeated throughout the
season, but lost in the finals.
Both teams are getting ready to play
their first exhibition , 'game .on _Friday
against Sarnia-St.Claii. The seniors hit the
field at 1:30 p.m. and the juniors should
start at approximately 3 p.m.
19wpitch playoffs
continue to be tight
Entering the final week of play in the
Goderich Men's Slowpitch League, they
are still no closer to declaring a champion.
In"B" Division, Canadian Tire played
host to the undefeated Cedar Lodge team
last week. Going into the fourth, the two
teams were tied at five apiece, when
Canadian Tire broke it open scoring two in
the fourth, four in the fifth and eleven in
the sixth en route to a 22-8 victory.
This key win moved Canadian Tire into
first place, but Cedar Lodge has two
games in hand. Those two games are
against Little Bowl and the Renegades,
both of who are capable of being the
spoiler.
Tickers also picked up their first victory
of the payoff campaign with a 7-3 win over
Harbour Park Raiders.
"A" Division still finds the Bulldogs and
Bears battling it out. This week will tell the
Story as the Bears have five games to play
and the Bulldogs two. The key game will
be on Sunday September 18 when the two
teams meet head on.
In "C" Division, Meneset came up with a
key 5-3 victory over Carlow to move into
first place. Both teams picked up an ad-
ditional two points through Bluewater
forfeits. Carlow has one game left against
Sifto. This has been rescheduled for
Sunday, September 18 at the Signal Star at
2 p.m.
Should Carlow win that game, they will
tie Meneset and force a sudden death
ganin! for the championship.
All team reps, are reminded of the fall
meeting at the Recreation office on
Monday September 19, starting at 7 p.m.
MVP and MSP voting will take place as
well as nominations for next year's
executive.

French Cleaners
advance to semi-final
Last week featured one game in the
Goderich Industrial Fastball League. That
was the fifth and deciding game of the
playoff series between French Cleaners
and Hayter's. Both teams faced
elimination if they lost.
The two teams combined for 12 errors in
the game, more than any other game in the
league this season. The final score was 6 - 0
for French, with five of those runs being
unearned. The only earned run of the game
came on a solo home -run by Jim Martin.
French had six hits off Dave Scholl with
George Sutton getting two.
A lifeless Hayter team could only muster
three hits off Don Bogie, who pitched a
strong game..
French now play the hot Hotel Bedford
team in the semi-finals, which began last
Sunday. The other semi-final sees
Lakeport Advertising playing Kirkey's
Kar Kare.
Bantams end playoffs
In the three game series with Seaforth in
the WOAA Semi Final§ Goderich won the
second game 10 - 8 in extra innings. The
winning runs were scored on a two out
double, hit by Darryl Black. Darryl also
had three singles and scored three times.
The hot bat for the game was Pat Frayne
who hit five singles scored three times and
had one walk.
Other hits in the game were Darcy
McGee a double and a single, Chris Smith
two singles, Pete Nivins and Todd Wilson
with a single each. Jim Beattie was the
winning pitcher.
In the deckling game Goderich could not
get enough hits, resulting in a 6 - 2 loss.
Again Pat Frayne had the most hits, going
three for three with two doubles, a single
and a walk. Chris Smith and Darryl Black
each had a double and a single, and Pete
Nivins had two singles.
The team has come a long way since the
beginning of the season and can be very
proud of their overall record of 12 wins, 12
losses plus getting to the semi finals in the
WOAA and the quarter finals in the OBA.
The team members for 1983 were Bob
Barwick, Jim Beattie, Ray Bedard, Darryl
Black, Mark Burbine, Greg Chase, Pat
