club scores
On August 30 the Goderich
Duplicate Bridge Club held a
nine -table Mitchell game.
Cathy McDonald and Pat
Stringer led North-South
with 60 percent; Pat Reich
and Marie Stenunler,
visitors from Troy,
Michigan, came second with
551/2 percent; Marg Hall and
Frank Laverty were third
with 55 percent; Helen
Tench and John Wood came
fourth with 51 percent.
Mary Ann Dempsey and
Dawna Sproule led East-
West with 60 percent; Bill
Schaefer and John Stringer
came second with 55 per-
cent; Joanne Duckworth and
Lee Ryan were third with 54
percent, and Bill Cochrane
and Bill Duncan placed
fourth with 53 percent.
On September 13 the
quarterly Club Champion-
ship game will be played.
$100,000
lost in fire
SEAFORTH - Over $100,000
and clo)o 200 pigs were
lost in a barn fire at the farm
of Richard Downey, of RR 5
Seaforth, lot 10, Concession
4, which started on August 25
around 5 p.m.
After blowing straw into
the barn, the Downeys were
having ,upper when Clare
Downey noticed smoke
coming from the upper
section where the straw was
stored. The fire, which was
brought under control
around 3 a.m., destroyed the
main barn, the pig barn, the
milking equipment and
approximately 40 sows and
140 weaners.
Cattle were in the field
when the fire started mand
none were lost. The family
managed to save 25 calves
and some pigs.
Cause of the fire is
believed to be spontaneous
combustion.
