The Goderich Signal-Star, 1983-09-07, Page 10PAGE 10,--GODERIC H SIG;NNL .STAR,'WEDNESDAY, SEPTMBER 7,1 PO ular area shoe repairman bets new home workshop By Darrell Kloeze Lorne Reid, Lucknow's master shot: repairman, knows what makes a good business: be friendly, do good work, and charge reasonable prices. They're not secrets, of course, but so often nowadays people forket them too easily. For Lorne Reid, business has always been good. He says he rarely needs to advertise, because enough people hear about him by word of mouth. He has customers from all over Bruce and Huron counties. Many people come regularly from Goderich, Kincardine, Wingham and Clinton to have their shoes repaired, their skates sharpened, or bags and purses fixed: Mr. Reid started repairing shoes almost 40 years ago. He was stricken with polio at an early age, and the Department of Education arranged for him to apprentice with S. C. Rathwell, who owned a shoe store at the time in the building where Fairview Foods now is. For the first six months of his appren- ticeship Mr. Reid did not make any money, but he says, "When I think back I wasn't worth very much, then." But Sam Rathwell was a nice man to work for, and Mr. Reid says he was a good teacher. lie trust have been, because in 1955 Lorne Reid took over Rathwell's repair shop, and he was left repairing shoes on As own. Eight years later, Rathwell's Shoe Store moved across the street to where Les Petter's Shoes is now. Mr. Petter bought the store 11 years ago. Lorne moved with the store and for the past 20 years his customers could find him working the back. But now, Mr. Reid is moving again; he has recently started working in a workshop at his home. The change has made things much easier fr-- hi,.• HP F:'- r".".r now than he had at the store in town, and the machines are placed more to his advant- age. The large machine used for stitching soles, for example, is made to be operated standing up, so it has been sunken into the floor where Mr. Reid can easily operate it from his wheelchair. Mr. Reid says shoe repairmen tradition- ally use benches from which they do much DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO DESERVES THE JUNIOR CITIZEN AWARD? But his new workshop is set up so that he does not have td leave his chair to do any. work. The story behind his new workshop is truly amazing as well. Mr. Reid's sister, Jessie Stevenson, did most of the carpentry work in the shed behind the house to make it into a workshop, That involved adding four feet of length on to the shed and redoing the inside to • make it suitable for working in. Just last year, Jessie Stevenson added on an addition to the shed, making a small garage for their tractor and tools. Mr. Reid says she did about 80 per cent of the work for that as well, including all the plans and cutting. Mrs. Stevenson also works as a clerk at Les Petter Shoes. That will make it convenient now for people who need their shoes repaired but who cannot make it out to Lorne Reid's home east of town on Highway 86. He says they can still bring their shoes and boots into the shore store in town, and his sister can bring them out to the house. As if she were not busy enough, Mrs.Stevenson also tends a large flower garden around the house, and smaller ones elsewhere on the property. The Reids keep a very large part of their 150 acre farm behind the house as a lawn, and rent the rest out to farmers. Mr. Reid keeps the huge lawn cut, and the property looks very neat. In his workshop, Mr. Reid can do anything from repairing shoes, boots, bags, purses, to sharpening skate blades and fixing zippers. He has a few large machines to help him with his work, but he also does much of it by hand. He can do practically anything people ask him to. Quite often he has to build up the soles on boots and shoes that have been worn down. Rebuilding a shoe to give better foot support is another common job. He has become quite an expert on feet through his years of experience, and can usually think of something to do for people who come in who have problems with their feet. Help might mean strengthening the shoe's bottom to take the weight off the ball of the foot, or shaping the sole or an instep to distribute the weight more evenly. Whatever the method, Lorne Reid must produce good results, evidenced by the number of customers who return to him all the time. 11 Lorne Reid Is now working out of a workshop behind his house. His sister Jessie fixed up the shop for him, and he likes the room It gives him to repair shoes and bags, sharpen skates, plus the countless other things he does.
