Guides spend two weeks in Mexico
BY SYLVIA BRADY
Sixteen girls and two
leaders from Mapleway
Area Girl Guides spent two
very enjoyable weeks in
'!Mexico this summer. One
week was spent at the World
.centre, "Our Cabana" in
Cuernavaca and the other in
Mexico City where we
stayed in the Guide
residence called ' `Ficalle".
Our first few days in Mex-
ico City, we enjoyed the
Folkloric ballet, climbed a
pyramid, visited the
museum and saw the Aztec
calendar, bargained in
markets and even went to an
amusement park i where en-
trance in and rides are less
than three cents each) !
Our second week was at
Our Cabana and the pro-
gram there is excellent, giv-
ing the girls a chance to take
part in service projects and
to develop a greater
avrfareness of the way of life
in other countries of the
world. One day in each ses-
sion, approxiibately 100
children from less fortunate
families are brought to Our
Cabana by bus and each
Guide or Scout unit there
takes the responsibility of
entertaining them.
Mapieway was well
prepared and spent a busy
afternoon doing crafts,
'games and songs with 20 lit-
tle girls aged nine to eleven.
Our girls also contributed
dolls and toys they had made
to the Christmas project the
Cabana arranges each year
for about 2,500 children.
We had a World
Awareness breakfast where
proportionate sized groups
were given the food
equivalent available in
First, Second, and Third
World countries. It was a
real eye opener, especially
for the ones in the Third
World section who only
received a handful of rice! In
actual life, it would have
been the ration for a full day
but we only had to hang on
until lunch time.
There was also plenty of
time for relaxing in the sun,
swimming, drafts, games,
sightseeing and shopping
which added to the special
fun of making a lot of new
friends.
We enjoyed a delightful
Mexican fiesta with a
Mariachi band and a big
Pinata to break.
The carnival night was a
hit too. The girls played
bingo, dart toss games, had
their faces painted, pictures
taken and fortunes told and
all the pesos went to the-
-World Friendship,fund. -
International' night was a
lot of fun with cameras
flashing from every corner
of the room as each unit
made its presentation.
The time flew by and it
was over all too soon. We
spent our last full day back
in Mexico City getting all our
souvenir lists completed and
our last evening trying
desperately to put
everything into our suit-
cases!
Lots of new friends got up
very early to wish us a, safe
journey home — a special,
final touch to our wonderful
Mexican adventure.
