Victoria Opera House,
under the new management,
received a bumper
patronage at , its .'opening on
-Tuesday even'ing,,.f;,, The
moving picture program was
just as good as advertised
and Mr. Thomas is to be
congratulated on his
inaugural.
The schools opened on
Monday, the only changes at
the Public Schools being that
Miss Ball takes Miss
McEwan's class in the
Central and Miss Mabel
Donaghey, Mr. McLean's
class in St. David's Ward. At
the Collegiate, the only
teachers on the staff from
last term are Principal Field
and Dr. Strang. Messrs.
Robertson and Firth and
Miss Donohue are com-
mencing the term, and there
is one vacancy, Miss
Doherty having resigned.
The guests at the summer
hotel were greatly reduced
in number this week by the
two chilly days.
Although the whistles
sounded the completion of
the breakwater on Friday, a
number of men have been
employed since putting the
finishing touches on the
structure when the weather
permitted.
The Hotise of Refuge
committee of County Council
held its quarterly meeting -in
Clinton on Monday and in-
spected the institution
thoroughly. There are 86
residents in the house and all
are satisfied with their
home.
50 YEARS AGO
"Gid" Litt, Goderich
reinsman, has entered the
Hall of Fame in the harness
racing world. He drove his
Bedford Grattan to victory in
the futurity for pacers at the
CNE in Toronto last week.
Goderich's two summer
hotels, the Sunset and the
Menesetung have closed
after a quiet season. The
managers attribute the
decrease in business to the
deplorable condition of the
Blue Water Highway and the
fact that many potential
guests from the U.S. went to
the Century of Progress
Exposition at Chicago.
Apprximately 1,000 pupils
returnea to Goderich schools
on Tuesday morning. The
total figure was up slightly
over the previous year.
Nearly 1,000 people at-
tended the annual field day
of the Goderich Township
Men's Club at Porter's Hill
on Labor Day.
25 YEARS AGO
Pupils flocked back to
schools in Goderich on re-
opening day Tuesday and
when the total enrolment at
all Goderich schools was
tabulated, it stood at 1,601—
an all -tune high.
Three new constables have
been sworn in as members of
the town police force. They
are Michael Smith of Lon-
don, Ross Crawford of
SYra*.ford and Franklin
C.; et don of Stratford
Plans for an addition to the
overcrowded Goderich
Distr ict Collegiate Institute
were revived when the board
met Tuesday night. The
board has authorized A.R.
Scott to make a survey.
Police Chief F.M. Hall will
fight the charges laid against
him by the Goderich Police
Commission which
suspended him on August 27.
5YEARS AGO
The . Huron-Brtace Estates
subdivision plan, which has
been almost forgotten for
four years, is slowly being
revived. By next summer,
the first of 97 lots could be
ready for sale on,a 30 -acre
parcel of Goderich Township
land just east of the Goderich
town limits off Highway 8.
Conklin Lumber
representative Doug Lynds
said in a telephone interview
from London on Friday that
his company hopes to begin
development of the lots
"very soon" as they are
running out of available lots
in Goderich.
Fifteen people have ap-
plied for the job of airport co-
ordinator at Sky Harbor
Airport and six or seven of
these applicants will be
interviewed on Friday, says
town clerk Larry McCabe.
