Approximately 3,000 athletes will be
participating in the 1983 Ontario Summer
Gaines, set for Sudbury from September 2-
5.
The Games 'will include baseball,
basketball, .canoeing, cricket, cycling,
field hockey, golf, karate, orienteering,
rugby, sailing, shooting, softball, swim-
ming, tennis, track and field, volleyball
and water skiing.
The Games are a program of the
:Ministry of Tourism and Recreation to aid
the development Of talented amateur
athletes.

The Goderich Minor Ball Hockey league
is now into playoff action with the fiat
round starting last night (Tuesday).
The first round is a best two out of three
series with the Capitals meeting the Leaf§
and the Oakleafsfacing-off against the
Generals. (Results from the game were
not available at the time of printing. )
The final series, which will be a best
three out of five, will be played on Sep-
tember 8.
Area cyclists place in fourth annuai Pre, -Am Race
One hundred and fifty-seven compete in 11 categories here for trophies and money
Entries were up in the 4th Annual Pro -
Am Cycling Race held in Goderich last
Sunday. This year a total of 157 cyclists
tested their bicycles,and legs, under good
weather conditions. Last year's race had
approximately 145 racers entered.
There were a total of 30 entries in the
amateur division which was broken into
five categories according to the par-
ticipants age.
The eight and nine -year-olds made one
lap of the route which took them from the
Town Hall on West Street to the square,
then down South Street to Elgin Avenue, to
Wellington Street and then back to West
Street. The course covers 1.5 kilometers.
The 10 to 11 -year-olds covered_a distance
of three kilometers, or two laps, the 12 to
13 -year-olds made three laps, the 14 to 15 -
year -olds made four laps and the 16 and
over group made six laps.
In the 10 to 11 -year-old category, Nadja
Davidson, of Goderich, finished third, and
in the 12 to 13 -year-old race, Jan Davidson
finished second and Alistair Baker placed
third. Both of these racers are from
Goderich.
In the 14 to 15 -year-old category Andy
Clicka of Kincardine placed first.
The professional racers were also
divided into categories. The Cadets went a
total distance of 27 km, the Juniors went
40.5 km, the Ladies went 30 km, Senior 3
went 40 km, Veterans went 40.5 km, and
the Seniors 1 and 2 went 75 km.
According to Jane Netzke, Director of
Recreation in Goderich, there were only a
few minor mishaps on the course, with
everything turning out nicely.
"The weather was great and the racers
liked our route," she commented.

Lakeport Adv'; rt'sing will play their first
game at 12:30 p.m. against Desboro. The
final game Saturday will have Goderich
Kirkey Kar Kare meeting Sarnia Indians -
at 5 p.m.
All of the finals will be played on Mon-
day, but there should be exciting games
throughout the holiday weekend.
The 15th Annual Goderich Industrial
Fastball League Tournament is to be held
this weekend at Agricultural Park with 32
teams competing for the prizes.
The winning team, in each division,
receives $275, the championship semi-final
winner receives $195 and the cham-
pionship quarter -final winner will receive
$95.
The consolation winner is awarded $125,
the consolation semi-final winner wins $100
and the quarter -final winner receives $50.
There will also be individual awards for
the most valuable players, most sport-
sman-like players, home run hitters, no
hitter by a pitcher, and one hitter.
Last year's "A" division champions,
London Ted Dilts, will return again this
year to defend their title. Their first game
will be played Saturday at 8 p.m.
The Cowboys from "B"division will also
be back with their first game being played
on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Goderich Bedford. will start the tour-
nament off by playing Lieury at 7.30

Drew Macaulay and Jeff Phelan scored
against Clinton.
Stnad-outs in this hard-working team
were Trisha Rumig, Drew Macaulay,
Donnie Rivers and Derek Gilchrist.
In Squirt house league action last
Wednesday, the Bombers defeated the
Giants 2-0 with Drew Macaulay scoring
both goals. In the second game of the
night, the Raiders and the Giants played to
a 1-1 tie, Jeff Klages scored for the Raiders
and Donnie Rivers replied for the Giants.
Three Goderich minor soccer teams won
Lake Huron playoff championships last
Saturday.
The Goderich Pee Wees beat Kincardine
2-0 in the final game on goals by Bill
Trebish and Robbie Dempsey. In a first-
round game, Goderich defeated Port Elgin
5-1. Coach Syd Hall thought that this free
team effort "when the chips were down"
made up for a disappointing regular
season performance.
Hall was especially pleased with the
performances of Ian MacKinnon, Brian
Chambers, Bill Trebish and Larry Lep-
pington.
The Goderich Atoms defeated Kin-
cardine in a final game 5-1. In preliminary
games, Goderich defeated Clinton 6-0 and
Port Elgin 6-1. Earlier in the week
Goderich had lost the league cham-
pionship at Kincardine by a 2-1 score, so
the playoff success was sweet revenge for
coach Dan McCallum's team.
During regular season, the Atoms
scored a total of 56 goals and only allowed
11 against.
The Goderich Squirts defeated St.
Columban 4-2 and then tied Clinton 3-3 in

Moore Township wins

The Goderich Bantam Hardball team,
sponsored by Bluewater Trucking, had a
hard week, losing two games to Moore
Township. Scores were 6-2 and 9-7, with the
final game going to an extra inning to
determine a winner.
This finished the O.B.A. playoffs, with
Goderich being one of the last five teams in
their classification in Ontario.
Hits during the series were Darryl Black
with a triple, a double and a single; Darcy
McGee, three singles; Jim Beattie, two
singles; Pat Frayne, Pete Nivins and Greg
Chase, a double each and Chris Smith and
Paul Nivins, a single.
Goderich also lost the first game of a
three game series in the W.O.A.A. semi-
finals against Seaforth. In that game,
Darryl Black had a double and two
singles; Paul Nivins and Pete Nivins had a
double and a single each; Darcy McGee
and Greg Chase had two singles each;
Todd Wilson had a double; Colin Shand
and Chris Smith had a single each.
Their playoff record is 6-4, with an
overall record of 11-11.
The Bantams next game will be against
Seaforth in the W.O.A.A. playoffs.
