Research has not yet
shown that regular exercise
prolongs life (at least not in
people - some laboratory
rats do live longer when they
exercise). There are,
however, many clear health
benefits:
1. Exercise contributes to
a positive self-image and a
feeling of well-being. As
well, it helps you to cope with
the stresses and tensions of
everyday living.
2. The cardiovascular
system benefits from
exercise. The lungs, heart,
and blood vessels work with
greater efficiency and less
strain. Much scientific
evidence indicates that
people who are physically
active from a young age
have less heart disease.
3. Exercise increases the
tone, strength and en-
durance. of muscles.
Improved posture, fewer low
back problems, and a better
overall appearance are just
some of the benefits.
4. Joints that are exercised
are flexible and mobile.
They are also less suscep-
tible to injury and the stif-
fness that is often part of the
aging process.
5. Exercise can help retard
the bone (calcium) loss that
accompanies aging and
which leaves the bones
brittle and weak. This is
especially a problem for
women and often results in
fractures of the spine, hip
and wrist.
6. And last, but not least,
regular exercise is an
essential part of weight
also helps regulate the ap-
petite.
)Jxeeise',doesn't have to'
be excessive and exhausting
to be doing you some good.
You can be active in ways
that are enjoyable,
satisfying, and convenient
for your. There are a
multitude of choices - from
badminton to yoga; from
ballet to a walk in the woods!
In general, two main kinds
of exercise are desirable. 1.
Flexibility and stretching
which involves gently
bending, extending, or
rotating the neck, shulders,
elbows, back, hips, knees
and ankles to increase
flexibility and protect
against injuries. 2. Aerobic
activities which are
repeated, continuous
movements involving the
body's large muscle groups
such as brisk walking,
cycling, or swimming. This
type of exercise will improve
the efficiency and strength of
your heart, lungs and other
muscles. For maximum
benefits, these exercises
should be done at least three
times per week
(FREQUENCY), for a
period of at least 20 minutes
( TIME) and with your heart
rate in the Your Target
Heart Rate Zone (IN-
TENSITY). Target Heart
Rate is established by
subtracting your age from
200 for the upper limit and
170 for the lower limit. If
Jour heart rate per minute
immediately following
completion of an aerobic
exercise falls between the
upper limit and lower limt
for your age, you are
exercising at a rate that will
improve your car-
diovascular fitness. If your
heart rate is below the lower
limit the intensity of your
exercise has not been
adequate enough to produce
a training effect. If your
heart rate is above the upper
limit, you may be
overexerting and should
slow down a little.
