The U.B. Weldon was formerly named Shelter Bay and Jay C. Morse
Weldon has done for scrap.
Pilothouse serves as Goderich's marine museum
By SKIP GILLHAM
The grain storage barge
D.B. Weldon has become the
third member of the
Goderich Elevator Company
fleet to go for scrap this
year. She was towed into
Thunder Bay on June 11.
Like her storage mates,
R.G. Sanderson and Lionel
Parsons, this freighter
began her career as part of
an American lakes fleet.
She was built in Cleveland
in 1907 for Pickands,
Mather's Interlake Steam-
ship Company. This fleet has
long been a vital cog in Great
Lakes shipping and in 1983 is
celebrating its 100th anniver-
sary.
At christening ceremonies
our featured vessel was
named Jay C. Morse. Her en-
try, into service was heralded
because at 552 feet in length
by 58 feet at the beam (168.25
x 17.68 metres) , this was the
largest vessel in the fleet.
Today, Interlake operate
three vessels of at least 1,000
feet (304.80 metres) in
length. Things certainly
have changed.
The Jay C. Morse carried
coal, ore, stone and grain for
Interlake for over half a cen-
tury. She hauled in the
neighbourhood of 30 - 40
cargos a season and travell-
ed between U.S. ports from
Lake Superior to Lake Erie.
The Morse was laid up at
South Chicago from 1960 to
early 1965. She was then sold
to Quebec and Ontario
Transportation and joined
the Canadian inland fleet as
Shelter Bay.
Shelter Bay now ran as tar
east as the Gulf of a
Lawrence hauling grain ,to
Baie Comeau and Port Car-
tier and returning with ore
or pulpwood. Occasional
loads of newsprint, coal and
salt were also handled.
Shelter Bay managed a
few visits to Goderich during
these years bringing in
cargos of grain. Her capaci-
ty in this trade was 380,000
bushels or 11,500 tons when
hauling ore, coal or salt.
Shelter Bay had a routine
and uneventful career. She
Protect your feet
The Canada Safety Coun-
cil's theme for the 1983 Farm
Safejy Week is 'Weed Out
Hazards - Wear Protective
Equipment'.
It is recommended that
foot protection be worn at all
times. Common causes of in-
jury on the farm include
dropping heavy items, get-
ting feet under rotary
mowers or in augers, being
run over by machinery or
stepped on by animals, and
stepping on sharp objects.
Proper protection would
prevent or lessen the severi-
ty of most foot injuries. Safe-
ty boots should be the
regular footwear on the
farm.
Safety boots should have
the certification label of the
Canadian Standards
Association. Consult your
footwear dealer for the pro-
per class of protection for
your operation.
did run aground in the
Brockville Narrows on May
2, 1967, and it took two days
for her to be released. A trip
to Port Weller Drydocks was
required to make her ship-
shape again.
Her last full season was
1978 and she made two stops
in Goderich that year. Her
final visit ended her active
career and after unloading
she was sold to the Goderich
Elevator Company. They
renamed her D.B.
Weldon.
Although the vessel has
gone, a part remains behind.
On May 27, 1981 her
pilothouse was removed and
placed on a cement pad to
serve as a marine museum
here in Goderich. This struc-
ture had been added to the
vessel during the winter of
1953-54 and replaced an
earlier and smaller house.
The rest of the ship is now
at Thunder Bay where the
men of Western Metals will
break up the hull for scrap.
