St
on Square
While many small
municipalities across
Ontario helplessly witness
the demise of their core
areas, the Square in
Goderich may be heralded
as one of the few success
stories.
This week, another new
business, Peoples Depart-
ment Store, re -opened its
doors at its former location
on The Square and no-one
could be happier than
District Manager, Mike
Coates of Listowel.
"I am happy with the end
result here. It was a com-
promise with the town but I
think the building will
compliment the Square," he
said. ``This is an unusual
town in that the downtown is
being reborn."
Peoples Department
Store, a division of Marks
and Spencer, has been a part
of the Square bsuiness
community for more than 25
years. The store was closed a
few years ago and rebuilt
from the inside out.

store diain has been serving
Canadians for over 60 years
and features 70 stores in
Central Ontario, Quebec and
the Maritime provinces.
Eleven of those stores are
located in 'Central Ontario,
an area bounded by
Goderich In the south and
Cornwal in the northeast.
Officially' opened Wed=
nesday, Coates said the
Goderich store "touches on
the basic needs of the
family" offering everything
from toys to clothing.
"Our strength is in the
small, rural. communities.
We are a friendly, personal
department store catering to
the needs of the family."
Goderich joins a list of
several area conununities,
including Kincardine,
Hanover, Listowel and Owen
Sound, served by Peoples
Department Store.
While the store in Goderich
achieved a hint of notoriety
and publicity for its ap-
pearance in the past, Coates
is anxious to show off the
new 6,000 square foot store to
the shopping publil: in town.
"I put on' a personal push
to open the store in
Goderich," he said. "We've
had a place in town in the
past and we wanted to
remain downtown and im-
prove our image."
The store, managed by
Jim Tyo, opened Wed-
nesday.
Fire, hall
fails to
meet code
WINGHAM - An engineer's
inspection which confirmed
that half of the Wingham
Fire Hall fails to meet
Ontario building Code
requirements and may be
unsafe has given fresh im-
petus to plans for an area
fire board.
At a meeting between the
Wingham council and
council members from four
townships which participate
in the local fire departanent,
all members promised to try
and reach a final agreement
on the proposed fire board
within the next month or two.
In the process, they
managed to iron out two of
the problems which have
been holding up process: the
question who would own the
main fire hall, and whether
or not to put a satellite fire
station in Howick Township.
Representatives agreed in
principle to joint ownership
of the central hall, with
Howick to provide and
maintain its own sub -station.
Equipment would be pur-
chased and owned jointly,
and any operating deficit
would be split among the
participants.
Still to be resolved is the
question how much each
municipality will'pay toward
operations and equipment,
but the consensus at the
meeting was that this could
be worked out without too
much difficulty.
