The Roots Of Rock And Roll:
Popular Music Of The SO's S
Much attention has recently been direct-
ed at the nostalgia for popular music of
the 1950's. This course will take a
somewhat serious look at the first
generation of rock 'n' roll artists. Who
were performers like Bill Haley, Elvis
Presley, Fats Domino and Little Richard?
Where did their music come from and
why is its impact still being felt on
popular music of the 80's?
During a 6 week period this course will
examine the three major categories of
popular music of the 1950's: "Rock-
abilly" (Hip -swivelling music of Elvis
Presley and his imitators); "Rhythm and
Blues" (the pounding dance music of
black artists such as Fats Domino and
Little Richard); "Doowop" (the sweet
harmonies of singing groups such as the
Platters). By listening to a cross section
of examples each week, we will discover
the way these styles draw their vitality
from traditionally American music;
Blues, Country, Western and Gospel.
