HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1983-08-17, Page 2PAGE 2—GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17,191x3 Construction on new building in progress By Stephanie Levesque Meeting its anticipated target date, the construction of the $368,22 split-level ad- dition to the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority's ad- ministration building in Wroxeter started Monday, Aug. 15. Authority officials along with Ministry of Natural Resources representatives and MPP Murray Elston (Lib. -Huron -Bruce) took part in the sod -turning ceremony at the administra- tion building Aug. 11. MVCA chairman Dave Gower of Goderich said the sod -turning ceremony is the culmination of three years of serious consideration of an office expansion. "The need has always been here since we expanded our services," said Mr. Gower. Presently some of the staff are housed in offices in downtown Wroxeter and the chairman said it is impor- tant to have all staff under the same roof. The project is to be funded by both the federal and pro- vincial governments with the authority making up the remaining amount. Mr. Gower indicated the federal government will pay $118,000 through its unemployment insurance program. This, he said, will employ 20 people for 492 weeks. The provincial government will pay $142,000 which will pay for material, equipment and some labor. The project is expected to be completed by March 31 of next year. Mr. Gower an- nounced that Henry Exel of Brussels will be the contrac- tor co-ordinating the con- struction of the 5,940 square foot addition. Various dignitaries, in- cluding Howick Township Reeve William Newton and MNR deputy regional direc- tor James Parker of London, brought greetings, Mr. Newton commented that the administration building is on the site where he received his secondary education. Tie also noted that back in the 1930's he did his bit for conservation by plan- ting some of the trees still existing on the site. Commenting on the plans for the addition, the township reeve suggested that "perhaps the township should pave the road" which fronts the administration building. MVCA chairman Gower assured the reeve that the executive commit- tee will be sending such, a re- quest to the township `in the near future. il • A signature campaign against abortion clinics was launched here Tuesday. The campaign organized and launched here by Laurie Erb, is part of a province - wide signature campaign. Mayor Eileen .Palmer, MP Murray Cardiff and two local clergy gathered for the press conference. Recently the group had full-page advertisements in local'? newspapers urging people to support the stand with singatures. Goderich is acting as the focal point for the signature campaign in Southwestern Ontario and the group plans to run fur- ther ads in major daily newspapers containing the signatures. More than 1,100 signatures, at a cost of $2 each to cover advertising fees, have been collected in the area. Cards have been placed in stores, churches, business and malls in the southwestern Ontario region. Erb said the response to the ad campaign, Freedom fo Choice ? has been phenomenal and solicited numerous donations, for as much as $50, and signatures. Branches in Toronto and Ottawa are conducting similar campaigns. The signature campaign is expectedt o close September 10 and names will be published in local newspapers. A full list of signatures will appear in the Globe and Mail in October. The group hopes to suc- cessfully oppose the establishment of abortion clinics, similar to the one attempted in Toronto by Dr. Henry Morgentaler. In a prepared statement, Erb said the group hopes to "motivate the media to return to responsible jour- nalism by accurately researching and presenting the badly needed facts to the public." Accept tender Goderich town council accepted the tender of the Lavis Contracting Company Ltd. of Clinton for storm sewer installation and street reconstruction of three blocks of Hincks Street and two blocks of Mary Street. The Lavis bid of $112,838 was the lowest of six received. Commissioner of Works, Ken Hunter, said the storm sewers will be installed in the Hincks-Mary Street area and the roads will just be gravelled this year. Paving will not be completed until 1984. Other bids received were; Machan Construction Monkton, $116,187; Omega Contractors, London, $127,937; Seeley and Amill Construction Ltd., Dun- dalk, $115,038; Arnott Construction Ltd., Collingwood, $165,219 and H. Kerr, Wingham, $123,193. A bid from Bud Mervyn Construction of Owen Sound was received ten minutes past the noon deadline, Monday, August 15 and was not accepted. The tender must meet with the approval of the Ministry of Transportation and Communication before work can begin. Centre may be use • from page 1 to other facilities in Palmerston and Oxford County. Gregg said that one or two residents were transferred to the Southwestern Regional Centre in Cedar Springs. The staff of the centre has also been on the move and Gregg said that many have resigned and or relocated. The staff has been reduced to 155.
