The Jerrys officially retired on July 11 after selling their wholesale paper and food service products business, H O. Jerry Limited, The Paper People, to Mr_ A.M. Harper, V.A. of Woodstock, a former Goderich resident. Mr. Harper will run the business under the name H.O. Jerry (1983).Limited. Bud Jerry was born in Collingwood and moved to Goderich when he was in Grade 7. Ruth Jerry was born in Goderich as Ruth Doer. The couple went to school together and were married in 1943. At the time, Mr. Jerry worked for W.C. Attridge in the office at Dominion Roads and Mrs. Jerry worked as a registered nurse_ On July 26, 1946, the Jerrys bought an established but somewhat rundown business at the dock in Goderich from the Charles C. Lee estate and H-0. Jerry Fuel and Har- dware was born. As a ship chandler, Mr. Jerry built up the business ( which was in fact, Goderich's oldest) and supplied boats at the harbor with everything from brooms, tea pots and mat- tresses to valves, ropes, cables and wrenches. He also had the only coal dock between Owen Sound and Port S4-onley. At the time, the harbor was the centre ce activity in Goderich with rmiany of the town's main industries located there. In the fall of 1953, the Jerrys sold their property at the dock to Upper Lakes Elevators (whose offices are now located there) and bought property on the corner of Kingston Street and Elgin Avenue. They built a hardware store there and Mrs. Jerry managed it while Mr. Jerry travelled as the presiding judge for the Canadian Trotting Association for the next 10 years. They also sold a portion of this property to British Mortgage and Trust which later became Victoria and Grey Trust_ While still on Kingston Street, Mr. Jerry started developing his wholesale paper products business and then went into the food services line as well. Six years ago, the Jerrys sold their hardware store on Kingston Street to Phil Main who is still in operation there. They then moved to 185 Park Street, property which they had also owned since 1953. They bad previously moved their buildings from the dock to this site and while leasing it to J.B. Aim Wholesale Plumbing for 10 years, they had retained a portion of it for their own warehousing purposes. After moving to . Park Street, the Jerrys' paper products and food service business really mushroomed and was busy enough to keep a staff of five to seven em- ployed. Mr. Jerry enjoyed all aspects of the hazinnd 8„u acted as head salesman. Mrs. Jerry, Whe had staated working full-time alongside her husband early'Wa, "did a little bit of eve” from answering the phones to banking and waiting on customers. Along the way, the Jerrys also raised two children, a son Jim who lives at R.R. Ii Goderich with his wife Sue; and a daughter, Mrs. Doug (Janette ) . Soper of Mississauga. The family lived on Newgate Street in Goderich until moving to Colborne Township in 1969_ Although they haven't had too touch time to relax yet, the Jerrys say they are planning to enjoy retirement. "1 plan to loaf a lot and move as the spirit moves me," says Mr. Jerry. He has been racing horses since 1949 and still has nine GODERICUSIGNA14M,YiEDNESDAY, A of them, Although they will keep him busy, be says he will not let them moor las time. "It's just a t thy," he explains. Mrs. Jerry plans to enjoy her gardening, sewing, knitting, cooking and bicycling. She says she likes to watch harness racing too but doesn't have much to do with their horses other than .patting then,,". Mr. and Mrs. Jerry enjoy dancing several nights a, week and plan to stay longer in Florida on their yearly trips there. Mr. Jerry sums up by saying that his main ob- jective in life has beer) .to succeed regardless of whatever he did. Thirty- seven enjoyable years in business proves that he did indeed live up to that ob- jective. REAL ESTE.H.
