It was initiated to provide a co- operative life insurance and a social fraternity for its members. To become a member, one must be a male over 16 years of age and pur- chase urchase life insurance from the society. There have been many changes over the years. From its meagre beginning, it has grown to a strong, competative life insurance society known today as Canadian Foresters Life In- surance Society with head offices at 84 Market St., Brantford, and with over $200,000,000 life insurance in force. The fraternal division now boasts some 200 courts with 35,000 members from coast to coast in Canada. The fraternal division is broken down into courts, district council, provincial assemblies and High Court. Today the courts are designated as men's courts, ladies' courts and mixed courts. The courts usually Meet once a month. They end representatives to district council which meets every three months and to a provincial assembly which meets once a year and to High Court which meets every three years. High Court is Canada -wide and elects the'board of directors which runs the life insur- ranee company and frater- nal society - a truly Cana- dian and democratic pro- cess. In 1883, 20 local residents applied and received a charter to open a Court at Benmiller. Today, 100 years later, many of the descen- dants of those chamber members are members of Court Benmiller. Although the majority of the members of Court Benmiller are rural - oriented, there are many members from urban areas as well. The Canadian Foresters, like many other organiza- tions, have had their peaks and valleys in membership. Huron County, in 1932, could boast of 32 courts within its boundaries. Today only five remain: Court Atwood M 1925; Court Constance No. 157; Court Constantine L 1842; Court Fascination L 1909 and Court Benmiller No. This year Court Benmiller celebrates 100 years of ser- vice to the community. Court Benmiller first met in a small hall located on a small parcel of land adja- cent to Benmiller School. In the 1960s when a school area was formed and Benmiller school was to be closed, the Foresters purchased the two -room school from Col- borne Township and since that time have converted the former school into a Foresters Hall and the grounds into an attractive park and sports field. Court Benmiller, like many other organizations, suffered a decline in membership during the war years and the decade after the war with the advent of t. v. In 1959, Court Fascination L 1909, a ladies' court, was formed in Benmiller and the founding of this court and the advent of associate members rejuvenated the Jennifer Chan and Nicole Worsell admire this entry, Purple Finch by John Bond, at the Goderich Garden Club's Flower Festival in the county council chambers at the Court House. Canadian Foresters have adopted as their national project, cancerresearch and Court Benmiller has played an active role in helping to raise over $1,000,000 for this research. The Benmiller Forsters' snowmobile marathons alone hay a raised more than $25,000 for cancer research and the Huron Cancer Society. They also contribute to many local charities and present awards at Holmesville, Col- borne, Brookside and Robertson public schools. The objective of the local court is to organize and pro- mote social and sporting ac- tivities for the community. On August 13, a dinner and dance at Saltford Valley Hall will be held to commemorate 100 years of service to the community.
