Collects information
Bits and pieces of the past
given to the Huron County
Historical Society are con-
stantly being catalogued and
filed for the use of resear-
chers and all those in-
terested in Huron County
history.
A sample of what may be
found in the Archives is the
following letter written to
Mr. Black, Post -Office,
Goderich:
My Dear Sir:
I noticed in the Signal that
you were asking for names
of those people who were in
Goderich in '67.
Well, I was there and my
wife was there also. It was
the year after the Fenian
Raids and Dominion Day
was on July 1.
I remember that two gun-
boats were lying in the har-
bour - the Prince Albert and
the Cherub - and a gang from
Goderich Township came in
to clean up on the Marines
but they didn't do much.
There was a big crowd of
people in town that day. A
steamer was launched. It
was called Ontario.
I also remember that on
West Street a glass of water
sold for one penny and cider
for three cents and ginger
cakes as large as auto
wheels for five cents.
Hoping to be present with
the old boys at the celebra,
tion.
I remain,
Yours sincerely,
Henry H. Martin,
Toronto
P.S. I was 12 years old at
the time.
The society thanks all
those who have contributed
to the preservation of such
items, as well as old papers,
diaries, family histories, ac-
count' books, scrapbooks,
pictures, information of any
sort. If you have anything for
the Huron County Historical
Society archives, please con-
tact one of the following:
Mrs. R.G. Emerson,
Goderich - 524-7715, Mrs.
Fordyce Clark, Goderich -
524-6704, Mrs. Doris Batkin,
Clinton - 482-3866, or Mrs.
Ethel Poth, Bayfield - 565-
2803.
The society will gladly call
at your home or, if.you can
arrange to meet at the ar-
chives, will be happy to show
you the many items that
have been saved for posteri-
ty.

further major repairs would
be made and it was further
decided to reconsider
tenders called earlier for a
new dump truck. According-
ly, a contract was awarded
to Carrier Mack Truck
Center Inc. for a 1984 tandem
axle dump truck.
At the regular session held
on July 19, a tax write-off in
the amount of $112.12 was ap-
proved in consequence of
nonpayment of a portion of
an assessment on the Sunset

By-law 14-1983, an amen-
ding by-law to By-law No.14-
1982, was prepared as a
result of an Ontario Mun-
cipal Board ruling on
January 31, 1983 on an ap-
plication by Mary and
Richard F. Donnelly to
license a gravel pit on Part
Lot 6, Concession 4 E.D. The
amendment was required to
clarify a "temporary use"
and also to clarify that strip-
ped overburden was not to be
stockpiled within the setback
zone on the perimeter of the
property.
By-law 15.1983 is an amen-
ding by-law to the township

nonconforming iota in Lot 3,
Plan 480, Saltfordo created
by t egranting of a
severance to Howard
Preszcator.
Both by-laws were given
all required readings and
were passed. Bylaw 14-1983
is to be submitted direct to
the 0.M.B. for approval,
while By-law 15-1983 is to be
circulated in accordance
with the provisions of Sec-
tion 39; The Planning Act.
Also considered at this
time were a number of re-
quests by owners of lots in
RP 22R38, Bishop's subdivi-
