Race system changed
BY ANNE NAREJKO
The economy seems to be
hindering all aspects of life;
from the way we spend our
summer vacation to the way
we bet at the horse races.
According to Theresa
Donnelly, race secretary at
the Goderich Raceway,
"attendance is about
average this year, between
700 and 800, but the betting is
down"
With the average number
of entries being 87 per week,
Donnelly feels that the
season is going fairly well,
and Llriver Randy Henry,
fully agrees.
"This has been a very
competitive season th

Club holds
The ladies of the Goderich
Lawn Bowling Club held
their annual tournament Ju-
ly 20, with entries from
several nearby clubs.
Despite the very hot
weather, the tournament
was a very enjoyable event.
Thefirst game was played
in the morning, followed by a
delicious lunch served by
Agnes MacEwan and her
committee. The lunch table
was centered with a
beautiful floral arrangement
by Alice Pridham. Club
members were happy to
have Ernie and Alice
Pridham and Irene White
drop by in the afternoon for a
track," he added.
The betting system was
changed this year to what is
called ABC betting. This
means that all of the bets are
made at the same window.
With the old system, a
person would go to one
window to place a bet on a
horse to win, then another
window to place a bet on a
horse to piace., and yet
another window to bet on a
horse to show.
Even though the economy
is hindering the raceway,
they are still managing to
break even. Coming up
before the race season ends
in early September, is the

visit.
Two games were played in
the afternoon and the first
prize was won by Isobel
Miller and her sister from
Lucknow. Second prize went
to Martha Rathburn ( happy
to have you back again Mar-
tha) and her partner, May
Richardson. Third prize
went to another Goderich
couple, Paddy Chappell and
her partner, Peg Lumsden.
The consolation went to
-- Rachel Riehl and her part-
ner from Seaforth.
The next big tournament
will be the annual August
holiday mixed pairs, the first
game to be in the morning.
Bridge Club scores
On July 19, a six -table
Howell game was played at
the Goderich Duplicate
Bridge Club with the
average score being 67'2.
Visiting Fathers Ed
Garvey and Tony Maher
were first with 80; Marg Hall
and Frank Laverty were se-
cond with 77'2; Mary Don-
nelly and Audrey Tobin were
third with 74: Michele
Hansen and Eveleen
McDonagh were fourth with
72; and tied for fifth with 70

Duncan and Frank and Jim
Donnelly.
On August 9 the club will

"Owl Prowl" planned at Falls
A campfire sing -song, an
"Owl Prowl" and a nature
hike are just some of the ac-
tivities planned at the Falls
Reserve this weekend. The
activities are centred around
the weekend theme of
wildlife.
To get the weekend off to a
good start join in for an old
fashioned campfire sing -a-
long on Friday night. Some
local musicians will be help-
ing out with musical accom-
paniment and added vocals.
On Saturday morning at 10
a.m. there will be a nature
hike along the Maitland trail
to discover what kind of
wildlife is living in the area.
The final activity of the
weekend will be an "Owl
Prowl" at 11 a.m. Sunday
morning. "Owl Prowl" gives
you a chance to see how well
you would satinve in the wild
as a predatory bird.
