Kincardine man wins Goderich 10 km race
This past Saturday a Kincardine native
proved that age has no barrier when it
comes to road racing. Forty-one year-old
Ken Inglis demonstrated the point when he
raced approximately 120 runners in the 5th
annual Goderich 10 Km Fun Run and Road
Race, and won. Inglis completed the
course in a time of 30 minutes and 38
seconds.
Bud Willis of Sarnia, who won the Men's
Open class, was right behind Inglis with a
time of 31:54.
Describing the race afterwards Inglis
said, "He (Willis) was right with me until
after the first water station then I started
taking the lead. He ( Willis) really gave me
a good race. He's a good runner."
Since Inglis was registered as a Master
(those 40 years -old and over) he placed
first in the category. Finishing second in
the Master's class was Glen Norcliffe of
Kincardine with a time of 34:17 and
finishing third was Dave Monteith of
London. Monteith's time was 35:17.
Besides Willis those placing in the Men's
Open class were Martin Dixon of Brant-
ford, 31:56; and Stephen Walker of Sarnia,
32:16.
Lynn Devereaux of Seaforth placed first
in the Womens' Open class with a time of
36:48. Finishing second was Audrey
McCabe of Acton, 38:34 while Joanne
Castle also of Acton placed third with a
time of 42:20.
In the Goderich Residents' category
Fred James placed first with a time of
37:22; second was Scott MacAulay, 38:47;
and third was Nick Hill, 40:55
Goderich Recreation Director Jane
Netzke says this year's race went ex-
tremely well. "I think the fact that it
wasn't really hot out helped the racers.
They also had a lot of help from residents
who voluntarily set up water stations,"
Netzke explains.
She adds, "Organizers had help from the
Circle City CB Club and that was much
appreciated."
An added feature to this year's race was
the installation of a large clock which was
rented from the'Waterloo Track and Field
Club. The clock, which was situated at the
finish line, allowed runners, spectators
and organizers to easily see the par-
ticipant's times.

The Ministry of Tourism and Recreation
has announced Syl Apps of Kingston, has
been appointed to explore the
organizational difficulties facing amateur
sports in Ontario.
"While mindful of the problems facing
amateur hockey, I have been reluctant,
until now, to pursue direct intervention
into some of these concerns," said
Tourism and Recreation Minister Rueben
; etz.
"The Government's role in amateur
hockey is to provide funding and leader-
ship for the continued development and
welfare of the sport. We do not wish to be
involved in the day-to-day affairs of any
sport, only assured that the sport is
providing opportunities for every resident
who wishes to participate, whether on a
recreational or competitive level."
A former Toronto Maple Leaf, Mr. Apps
served as an MPP representing Kingston

Rink Rats upset Rebels in
Recreational Ball Hockey
An upset took place in the Goderich
Recreational Ball Hockey League last
week when the first place Rebels were
defeated by the Rink Rats, 4-2.
Jeff Sargent of the Rats and Larry
Boyce of the Rebels each played a one-
man game during the first period and part
of the second, as both players took turns
scoring. Boyce got his team on the board
first when he took a pass from teammate
Brad Armstrong, and scored. With less
than two minutes left in the period Sargent
scored to tie the game.
During the second period Boyce put the
Rats back into the lead when he scored at
the 7:31 mark. But three minutes later
Sargent came back and scored to make the
game 2-2. Five minutes later, Bruce
Sheardown got the Rats° third goal when
he popped one by Rebel's goalie Jim
MacDonald. At this point both teams went
on the attack, however, the Rats proved
the stronger of the two, as Jim Fritzley
scored the final goal of the game for the
Rats.
The win over the Rebels was not the only
victory, for the Rats last week, as the team
also defeated Brewers, 4-2.
The Rats took an early lead in the game
when Jeff Denomme, Dan Duncan and
Kevin Meriam each scored a goal during
the first seven minutes of the first period.
Mitchell then proceeded to put
rewers on the board when he scored at
the 17:54 mark. Before the end of the
period the Rats went ahead, 4-1 after
Duncan scored his second goal.
During the second period the Rats
seemed content to simply hold on to their
lead. The team slowed down their pace and
played a defensive game and as a result
they held Brewers off until the 11:44 mark
when Larry Kelly scored. Neither team
scored during the rest of the game.
In other action last week the Knights lost
to United, 8-1 and were also beaten by the
Rebels, 6-2.
In the game against United, Mike
Lapaine led the scoring with a hat -trick
and one assist. Other goals were scored by
Mark Bellinger, who got two goals and an
assist; Ian Chisholm, who scored once and
got two assists; Mark Frayne, who also got
an assist; and Dennis Donnelly.
The Knights' goal was scored by Eric
Mitchell.
During their Tuesday night game
against the Rebels, the Knights went into
the second period down a goal with the
score 3-2. Larry Boyce, Brad Armstrong
and John Little each scored for the Rebels
while Dan McLean got both of the Knights'
goals.
During the second period the Knights
could not mount an attack, not could they
fend one off and as a result the Rebels
scored three more goals. Scoring for the
team were Brad Armstrong, Jeff
Denomme and Larry Boyce.
Ip the final match of last week, Auburn
came close to winning a game when they
tied Brewers, 3-3.
Bill Empy opened the scoring for
Auburn when he scored during the first
minute of play. Ray Vanstone put Brewers
on the board three minutes later when he
took a pass from teammate Tom Profit,
and scored. Before the end of the period
Peter Kohnert put Auburn ahead when he
deked the Brewers' goalie.
During the second period Brewers tied
the game on an unassisted goal by Van -
stone and then went ahead 3-2 after a goal
by Brian Mitchell. However, the lead was
short-lived as Auburn teammate Dave
Ceasar got the tying point with only 28
seconds left to play.
