Upon my return, I headed
a volunteer program for the
young and old in the
downtown area south and
east of Maple Leaf Gardens.
People like Charles Gundy,
A.E. Diamond and others
provided the suport. The real
guts of the program were
dedicated volunteers who
came from many racial and
religious backgrounds.
Finally, after twenty years,
my health suffered and I had
to withdraw.

Canadians to stand up ail be
,counted. I knew that there,
will be some apathy, ridicule•
and even scorn. This is
merely a testing, of one's
sincerity. The attitude that
good old Canada will muddle
through may not always be
enough. This summer, I
went camping into the
Okanagan and Fraser
Valleys and I felt a bit of
Canadian history when I
retraced the routes of Fraser
and Thompson and also saw
the results of building the
railroad through the moun-
tains. It makes our efforts to
preserve Canada small by
comparison.
I plan on spending my
prisoner -of -war pension and
other money in the sending
out of messages to„the
media, individuals nd
groups. The messages will
be carefully thought out
because of the desire to
reach people acid also
because I only have so many
dollars to do what I feel that
I must do. Roland Michener

read your letter with :much
interest and admiration for
your thoughts and, Wenn
tions, in which I hope you
findgood company along the
way.f9 Good company would
be acceptable for there .is so
much to do and how ainueh
time we have is suspect. We
have had sufficient in-
ternecine dealings in Canada
and it is time we pulled
together for a change.
After several - plane
crashes during the war, be-
ing shot down, strafed by our
own planes and heart at-
tacks,
ttacks, anything I can do and
the time to do it is a bonus.
I happened to be in the
House of Commons years
ago when there was a budget
leak. The Government and
Opposition made much of it,
hooting, desk thumping and
dragged it on and on. Finally
in all sincerity, a farmer MP
from the West rose and said,
"you have had your innings,
now let us get on with the
business of the country.” He
was jeered at by his fellow
members. I feel like that
farmer MP for many will
either ignore or jeer at what
I have to say. This does not
bother me -for I know thatat
least it will start people
thinking.
The messages that I will
send out will be the same for
all parts of the country. I do
not believe in playing
politics and giving up prin-
ciples and beliefs just for the
sake of sweetening the im-
pact in certain regions- This
is why it is important that
what must be said should not
be influenced by political,
business or union ties. Mind
you, I am a firm believer
that I only have the right to
speak up when I also par-
ticipate in the happenings of
our country.
Favourable response to
date has been received from
Peter Bronfman, Walter
Gordon, Roland Michener,
John Bassett, Harrison Mc-
Cain, etc. The next step is to
reach out to the media. In
May, I plan to go by bus to
Winnipeg. Regina, Edmon-
ton, Calgary and Vancouver,
staying at the cheapest ac-
commodation. If my health
and money hold up it will be
Quebec and the Maritimes in
the Fall. By then there will
be others ready to carry on.
Letters are starting to
trickle in from different
parts of the country. Now the
time has come to reach out
to the media and individuals
on a larger scale. The costs
of offset printing of the
messages, stamps and get-
ting addresses must now be
nd coiwtries
weighed. This business 'of
personal typing of letter§ is
slow and to be honest, I just
do not have the same energy
that I had when we had the
downtown programs. There
must be people out.tl)ere who
are willing to take up the tor-
ah. Working for the good of
our country must never
become an ego trip.
We seem to be proud to be
Canadians when we win a
world eliampionship, Ken
Clark shelters Americans in
Iran, a Canadian seal-
Mount Everest, etc. The
media said that when Terry
Fox, the courageous one,
made his way slowly and
painfully across the country,
that this would bring us
together. Unfortunately, the
pride generated was only of
a temporary nature. I have
rnet many people from dif-
ferent countries in prisoner -
of -war camp and they held
their heads up high when
they talked of their native
land. I feel that we Cana-
dians are proud of our coun-
try but for some undefined
reason are reluctant to put
our caring into words and ac-
tion.
What do we stand t4 looe
by just sitting Welt and let-
ting
etting things happen? lin the
70's England had racial pro
bless in their large cities
when people competed for
jobs_ and'housing. This is
possible here and I can think
of three areas in Metro
Toronto that could be tiot
spots. Other Canadian cities
could " face the same situa-
tion. The way we are going
we could be a nation divided
into regions, somewhat
similar to some Central
European countries. It is no
longer the quiet little ex-
istence that we have been us-
ed to.
The philosophy of Dr.
Albert Schweitzer thatiseach
of us in return for some good
fortune in our, lives should
reach out and -bring meaning
into the lives of others also
applies to one's doing, for his
country.
The bottom line is that it is
the apathy of people that
destroys communities and
countries. What a pity it is
that we Canadians take so
much for granted.
Yours sincerely,.
Jim Steele.'..
