CANADIAle CENSUS FIGURES :.
The figures of the census taken
last year are just being made public
and they show that our urban popul-
ation is increasing much more rap-
idly than our rural population: In
1901 our rural population was 13, 34es
536,, and our urban population 2,021;-
79e« Lase year our rural population
showed an increase of 574, 18313, or
17.16 eer cenfa, while our urban pop-
ulation showed an increase of
645„ or 62.25 percent. Ontraio shows
for 1911, a rural population of L.
7/35. ard an urban population oe 1,-
32848'9: a decrease of 52,184 in the
former cage. and an increase of 392,-
511 in the latter case. With our On-
tario farms alreedy eindermanne'd,
decrease of '52.,1e4 in ten years of
our farne population is rather a ser-

-A: COLLISION AT SEA:
The Beene as the Tel Hokle Ptvnged
into the Depths.
The Tai Holtu was a steamship of
3.100 tons, befit at Middleboro, Eng-
land, for the Osaka Steam Navigation
Co, says 'Ilia Engineering News. Hav-
ing sailed to Antwerp to eoroplete her
cargo, the steamship left that port
on Aug, 0, 1891', for Japan. On the
Sunday she pissea thee a
.he'Wey :fog, and at about 9 o'clock
that eight the steamer collided vio'-
lently 'with artother vessel. • At first
it was, supposed that no serious dam-
age had beeu 'elope, but in half an
bout; five feet of water was reported
in the forehold. • The water gained at
the rate of about two feet per hour,
and the ship gradually settled by the
Lead.
At 4 a.m. on Monday there was six-
teen feet of water in the forehold,
and all the pumping power available
made no impression upon the inflow.
At 5 ann. all hands took to the boats
and pushed off a few hundred yards
from the sinking steamship, and at
SOO a.m. the party was rescued by
the stearnehip Millfield. By this time
the fog had eleared away, and the
• stern of the .Tai Hoku could be seen
gradually rising in the air. Shortly
before 1 p.m. she began to roll heav-
ily, and then she plunged arid sank.
In the fifteen minutes previeus to her
final disappearance four photographs
were taken.
When the Tai Holtu went elown
there was, of eourse, considerable
steam pressure in her boilers, pos-
sibly sixty or seventy pounds.
When the bridge collapsed, the siren
and foghorn cords being attached to
it, both the siren and foghorn sound-
ed rust as the vessel disappeared.
The third and final -view shows, ap-
parently, an explosion. But as a mat-
ter of fact, said an engineer who wit-
nessed the accident and took the
photographs, there is little doubt that
when the water reached the boiler
fires. there was -a sudden generation
of steam and gas, which rushed with
ahnost an explosive effect up the time
and smokestack, earrying witla it
quantities of soot, whicla remained
suspended in the air for some min-
utes after the ship disappeared, There
was not the least sign of tee prover-
bial whirlpool when the ship went
down, though there was abundant sur-
face signs pf the gradual escape of
thse air imprisoned in the hull.
Household Hints.
If cockroaches reappear after you
have once exterminated them send a
package of insect powder to yew
next door neighbor. "
, In case of fire in your house retain
yeur nresenee of mind and let your
fire insurance policy be the Etat thing,
you earry out.
.There are preparation that will kill
the odor of tobacco sneoke isayour
parlors, but as a rule they- smell worse
than the tobacco smote.
Never give a house party when
painters and decorators are at wozit
in the house.
The only sure way to keep the dell-
eireo from hearing you sweafeli to est
out the swearing entirely:
Never build a spite fence. 21, doesn't
deaden the sound of your neighbor's
piano in the elightest degree.
The Value of Responsibility.
Greater than the value of canted
wile. facts is the value of responsibil-
ity. In a man's life it is the arrival
of some responsibility which arouses
the powers and makes durable the
qualities of manliness. The effect of
responsibility is instantaneous. It is
like a magnet in its power to eharge
the individual with the faculties need-
ed for the matter in hahd. A light is
generated among the fragments of in-
formation. Even after a syeternatic
education these fragments seem to lie
in the mind in a chance order -until
thie light appears and shows them
ready for use; then abilities develop
which, never would develop, even :with
practice, without responsibility.
