With character, class, quali- ty and variety, Bayfield's stores compare to the popular shopping areas of Elora and Niagara -On -The - Lake. When it's shopping time in Bayfield, it's time to think about birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, even Christmas. Bayfield shops offer unique gifts for everyone. . -A quick walking tour down Main Street shows the tremendous variety and fun that the shops offer. Lavender and Lace Lavender and Lace may seem small, but the mer- chandise sold in this new shop packs a lot of appeal. Fashion designer Carolyn Perry of Exeter has brought her original, line of lingerie and loungewear to Bayfield; perfect for these hot summer nights. Perry's nighties and un- dies, camisoles and slips come in a variety of colors, from jade to baby blue, from peach to sensuous black. Delicate fabrics, lace and frills make her designs uni- que and oh so appealing. Needle and I Too Next door is another popular specialty shop, Nee- dle And I Too. Summer tourists and local residents buy their patterns, wool, cross stitch, crewl, smock- ing mocking and needlepoint supplies here. A branch of their London shop, Needle And I Too specializes in all -natural yarns and those Ala a minimum of man-made fibre. The shop also 'carries an extensive supply of smocking and cross "stitch patterns and threads. If .you don't have the time or talent to create your own handmade garments, Needle And I Too also sells a selec- tion of handknit sweaters, stitched quilts and smocked outfits. They also take custom orders. Memory Lane At the end of a shady path shoppers come to Memory Lane, one of Bayfield's quality antique shops. Ken and Evelyn Holmes of Clinton have made quality and authenticity their aims since opening Memory Lane four years ago. They specialize in the Victorian and Edwardian eras and sell original china, glassware, furniture and paintings. Ken favors Nippon china and needlepoint topped benches. The Wardrobe Before it was in vogue, The Wardrobe opened in Bayfield. That was seven years ago and today The Wardrobe has established itself as one of the finest ladies' wear stores in the area. A shop for all seasons, The Wardrobe has a selection of upbeat, fun, cotton designs for summer and a full line of fall and winter clothes, featuring a pet g size selec- tion -of coats. .`4" The Wardrobe carries the best Canadian designs and styles, comparable to the current fashions in Toronto and Montreal. The shop also carries a popular line of ac- cessories, from belts and sashes to necklaces and scarves. Downtown Bayfield is a shopper.'s delight. Specialty stores and boutiques line the shady street. Alex IShevchuk is Mr. Woodchuck, the creator of marvellous wooden toys, blocks and puzzles. Pieces of wood are turned into airplanes, boats, cars, blocks and animals in Mr. Woodchuck's workshop. He has even created a replica arc filled with miniature animals, all made from wood. From toddlers to older children, Mr. Woodchuk is sure to have a toy to please your young at heart. He also sells a selection of chairs and kites. The Country Store Bayfield's village charm is enhanced by exterior and in- terior appearances of shops like The Bayfield Country Store. Owners Arlene and Jan Kok have developed a shop full of old-fashioned country appeal. Wood shelves, from floor to ceiling, are loaded with all sorts of handmade gifts and goodies. The scent of spices, potpourris, soaps and bubble bathes complete the atmosphere. The shop sells folk art and handcrafts including stoneware, geramic and glass. Also featured are decorative home accessories including fine soaps, candles, teas, spices, Swiss chocolate and exotic preserves. Sterling and gold hand- crafted jewelry accompany the wide range of ladies fashions for summer and fall. Summer lines lean towards cotton, while silk and wool are favorites for the fall and winter war- drobes. Comfortably settled in a frame building, constructed in the mid -1800's, The Bayfield Country Store has maintained the original old world flavor of the building, a perfect harmonizer for the quaint village of Bayfield. Red Pump Gifts If brass is what you're looking for, then Red Pump Gifts is the store to visit. Large glass windows at the store glisten with the ex- tensive variety of brass that owner Harry Israel has im- ported from all over the world. In business for seven years, Red Pump Gifts also features antique clocks, decorator accessories. and Spanish wood carvings. Another favorite area in the shop is the stuffed animal and original doll collection. Be sure to stop in just to see the newest in the nylon - faced dolls - pudgy, wrinkly skinned babies. They're adorable. Bayfield House Gallery One of the village's newest businesses is Bayfield House GallA a new direction for Bayfield, the art gallery sells original works by more than 30 Ontario artists. Oils, watercolors, sculptures and hand blown glass are featured here by owner Mary Rochon. Emphasizing the original character of the old home Bayfield House Gallery features a tea garden and an old stable that will house working displays of artists creating their crafts. Bayfield House Gallery in- vites shoppers to browse, see the displays and enjoy a cup of tea and jam -filled scones topped with whipped cream. The Gold Shoppe Goderich resident Anna McCutcheon has brought her creative talents to Bayfield this summer. Owner of The Gold ShoPPe, Anna specializes in custom designed gold jewelry. In Bayfield that means `.creating pieces with a - nautical flare, like a ship's "wheel, studded with diamonds. Rings, unique gold chains; intials and pendants are all made in 10 and 14 karat gold, as well as 18 karat, by special order. Canadian Traditions Sharing building quarters with The Gold Shoppe is another new business_Cana- dian Traditions. Owner Sheila Hicks isn't a newcomer to ' the retail business: Canadian Tedi tions is_ a branch of her popular St. Jacobs shop, situated in the heart of Men- nonite country. Sheila has brought Men- nonite talent to Bayfield in the form of . hand ' stitched quilts, cushions and placemats. Canadian Traditions deals exclusively in Canadian crafts, featuring deerskin shoes, Quebec pottery, hand woven items and Suttles and Seawinds clothing and home accessories. Westwind Just off Main Street shop- pers will find an unassuming little barn. Inside is a magnificent selection of locally handknit sweaters, quilts, collectibles and early Canadiana antiques, especially primitive pine. Welcome to Westwind. Connie West has taken one turn of the century barn and filled it with a collection of homespun items. Never has a barn looked so good. Charmans For the sports minded visitors, r'man's sells a complete line of casual clothing. A branch of their Lucknow store, Ken and Eleanor Har- man are spending their se- cond summer in Bayfield. Their store sells family sports wear, featuring shorts and shirts,. sweat suits and designer jeans. They also have a great selection of transfers for your t -shirts. Bayfield and nautical scenes. are the popular sellers here. Village Guild The Village Guild is as comfortable and inviting as an old home.
