In computer terminology. hardware refers to the machines themselves, and software to the programs which can be run on the computers. The software he has bought includes a program called Visicalc, and one called Wordstar. The first, says Machan, is the rnost popular calculating program among businessmen. It is easy to use, and very versatile. Visicalc, actually, offers only the basic framework for different calculating fume - tons. Using it, business managers can create their own calculating tables which can churn out routine calculations with many variables very quickly. Area people can take couches to learn about computers, but "the college courses are tailored for people in programming, net for business people," Meehan explains. Most business people will never need to knew how to program. There is a lot of good software on th; ! Market already, says Mach}n. He hopes to show peop what software is availaland how it can be us for them. Machan will give weathers to groups of up to 12 people, or to individuals. His courses will stress a hands-on ex- perience. But Machan hopes to offer more services tan seminars on computer use. After people have learned how to use the different programs, he plans to rent out computer time to people who want to use them. This would be ideal, he thinks, for people who are interested in computers, but who do not have the money to invest in a quality system. If people would like a more comprehensive trial period using computers, they will probably be able to lease equipment from Machan, as this is another service he plans to offer. He has .,a portable Hyperion eobiputer which he plans to use for this purpose. This computer has the same memory capacity as the larger IBM's, and the same Glen Machan clarifies one of the points made by the computer during a seminar on com- puter use given to the staff of the Royal Bank on July 5. Machan might also offer seminars given by other people. He says there are programs which might deal in specific businesses like real estate, and he can invite people in who have developed these specialized programs to explain their use. Machin's biggest plans, however, concern 'offering his computers for school instruction. He has prepared a presentation to school boards in the area urging To hold wheat on farm for pickup when and as trucks and the terminals are available EST. 1975 '44 4, GOLDSMITH -SILVERSMITH JEWELLERY DESIGNER, REPAIRS ALSO CERAMICS, WEAVING. Both he and Roberta have experience in the school system, at both the secon- dary and elementary levels, and he feels their combined experience will enable them to be useful to the school boards in any capacity. Machan says -at -this point, he does notknow.,where. his business is going. It depends largely on whether the school boards agree to use his services: He also does not know whether business people will be more in- terested in renting computer time or in leasing the computers themselves. Perhaps the Machans will even consider renting a permanent location, as well as having their mobile unit. One could be used for renting time out on the computers, and the other for seminars and school use. • .At.. the moment, however; Glen and Roberta Machan are "setting up to be as flexible as we absolutely can be. Blood donor clin°c held in Dungannon On June 30, the Dungannon Kinette Club sponsored a Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic. It was the first clinic to be held in the Dungannon community and the results will determine the feasibility of holding a clinic on a once - yearly basis. The Red Cross had set a goal of 150 donors. Although this number was not reached, the response from the community was very good and approximate- ly 112 people visited Brookside School • As with all volunteer, non- profit events, community members and businesses are called upon for donations of time, money or specific items which are needed at the clinic. Many area businesses, Chishohn's Fuels, Dawson's General Store, Eedy's Bakery, Erie and Huron Beverages, Hodges Milling Limited, Mc- Cormick's Cookies, Sher - wood's General Store, West Wawanosh Insurance Com- pany and W.G. Thompson and Sons Ltd., contributed towards supplying the juice, coffee, pop and cookies which are so very necessary. Others, Ashfield Service Centre, Mel Bogie Esso, Ed- wards Fuels Ltd., Hackett's Farm Equipment, Penny Hodges Hairdressing, Huron Landscaping Ltd., Johnston Brothers Bothwell Ltd., Johnstone and Son Fur- niture, Maitland Redi Mix Ltd., Nile Service Centre, Freeman Olson Ltd. Gravel Pit, George Smyth Welding Shop, Wayne Snyder and Son Garage, Delmar Sproul In- surance and Kathie Stan - bury Hairstyling, purchased space in the Goderich Signal - Star and the Lucknow Sen- tinel to advertise the clinic prior to the day. Sherwood Transportation Inc. provid- ed a mini -bus to transport members of the Mennonite Community to the. School and the Dungannon Kinsmen Club paid for the fuel. Nurses are an important part of the rest area where a cool hand and a friendly smile are greatly in demand. Helen Rintoul gave freely of her time and energy to help at the Dungannon clinic and to give everyone a feeling of confidence. The Huron Coun- ty Board of Education pro- vided the school. facilities and Greta Smith, with her 4- H Club members, babysat for parents with young families. There were many first- time donors at the clinic as well as those who are `veterans'. One man made his 85th blood donation. He has set a personal goal of 100 before his 55th birthday. The Red Cross needs blood all year round but it is especially vital during the summer months when so many more travellers are using the roads. Clinics are only possible when suppor- tive community meMbers are willing to show that they care.
