Cranking open a cool one in the back yard after the game, everyone had to agree that the Bears are stronger this year than ever before. Coached by Ken Duncan, the Bears have racked up 15 straight victories in league play; seven of which were mercies. During that stretch they have scored an incredible 253 runs while allowing only 54. Defensively, they have speed in the out- field, excellent pitching and a solid infield. They'll boot the odd ball but not enough to lose a game. Fifty-four runs against in 15 games spells solid. If you're going to beat the Bears, you've got to do it with the sticks — and that could be tough to do! Coach Duncan was kind enough to supply the following batting order and stats. Player On Base Home Runs Dave Graf Per cent 67 2 Dave Martin 84 0 Dan Duncan Brian Reeves John McDonald Gary Kloepfer Mike Lajeunesse Bill Wedlock Glen Schwartz Ron Ritchie Ed Mannering John Anderson Clare Charron Jerry Denomme Brian Thompson 64 3 73 5 61 2 79 4 71 0 53 2 63 2 663 59 4 70 0 68 2 68 1 Injured It's easy to see now how they scored 253 runs so far this year. The Bears though, are more than just a good team. They are well coached and disciplined. They generally show respect for the efforts of other teams and they are very supportive of league functions. They represent our league well in tournament play. If we cannot beat them, it is not our job to criticize but rather look at and ap- preciate their reasons for success. The Bears are a first class outfit. In games around the league this week, Goderich Auto Sales hammered Bluewater 22-3. Goderich Elevators were defeated by a surprising Sifto Salt team 17-14 but later in the week came back to edge Auto Sales by a score of 9-8. Coyotes blasted Meneset 17-5, Raiders doubled Carla* 14-7 and Garb & Gear finally hit the point column with a come from behind 15-15 tie with Local 1863. Port Albert Bulldogs pounded Goderich Gas Rite 18-3 while the Bears mercied Bluewater 29-1. Renegades defeated Tickers 17-11 while Goderich Chrysler beat Canadian Tire 15-5. Meneset blanked the Harbour Park Raiders 10-0 and Little Bowl rallied to edge Cedar Lodge 10-6. The, league tournament is only a few weeks away and to date, there are only three Goderich entries. This function can- not succeed without more local support!
