Mon. -Sat. 9.6 pm The first official Canada Day was celebrated in style this past weekend in the Goderieh area. The festivities included fireworks displays, a Canada Day parade, civic ceremonies, , beef barbeque, a friendship breakfast and the Optimist Club's Music Festival and Friends. The town of Goderich played host to several Bay City, Michigan officials who spoke briefly at the civic ceremony in Courthouse Park Friday. The American delegation was welcomed by Mayor Eileen Palmer, Warden Grant Stirling of Goderich Township and master of ceremonies Judge F.G. Carter. The annual Canada Day Parade, organized by the recreation department, featured over 50 entries in several categories. The winners included; Signal - Star Publishing and, the Hensall Co -Op .in tthhein- dustrial- comm ereia1 divisions; the Goderich Kinetted and IODE were the service dub winners; the Girl Guides and AM and G Ladies.: Auxiliary topped the church, school and family class; Emmerson Anderson and Ralph Morris were winners in the antique vehicle class and Lisa Van Den Broeck and Nancy Walter won cash prizes in the horse-drawn category. The Circle City CB Club again helped with the organization of the parade. Hundreds of music lovers flocked to the Optimist Riverside Park for the fourth edition of the Mjsic Festival and Friiends. The three-day music festival, featuring over 30 hours Of live en- tertainment, began Thur- sday and ran through Saturday evening. On Friday the Lions Club held a.hreakfast and later a beef barbeque in Lions Harbour Park, under the newly constructed picnic pavillion. The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of Canada has revealed completion of plans for a series of 32 district con- ventions of Jehovah's Witnesses in Canada during June and July. Arnold MacNamara, con- vention director in London, said approximately 110,000 persons are expected to at- tend the "Kingdom Unity" conventions scheduled in more than 20 cities. A convention is planned for the Western Fairgrounds in London July 7 -10. Harold McCallum, conven- tion manager, said 5,000 Jehovah's Witnesses from South Western Ontario are anticipated for the meetings. McCallum said the disuni- ty in the world is an alarm- ing thing to Jehovah's Witnesses. "There is genuine concern for the future," he said. "The increasing dialogue on the need for control of nuclear weapons, threat of war, terrorism and national divisions make many people wonder if world peace is possible. `This convention will stress looking in a new direc- tion for the solution to these problems. We . feel God's kingdom by Jesus Christ is mankind's only hope for lasting peace and security. The program will review how and when these things will be utlimately achiev- ed."
