The Goderich Signal-Star, 1983-07-06, Page 5• from ocg ' peace, OOP.. ed ` i,' strong rebuke when they attempted to Link hums .rights , . with world- wide liisarmamerit. The,sil and total of Wall was thlthe Russian group, who were representing peaceful negotiations, told the rladians,, that they shoal be more Concerned with their own country which has 10 million unemployed. They then continued to explain that they didn't want to be lectured by individuals who came to visit them, or told how to run their country. They also explained that their country was different than Canada, and that they had laws that dealt with dissenting individuals who opposed the government. It's obvious that the Soviets do not have the freedom of expression that the Canadians enjoy, and let's hope that this group will return to Canada with a deeper appreciation of democratic principles than they had when they left. 4pparently in Russia, dissenting individuals are `considered a security risk. They certainly wouldn't permit individuals camping in front of the Kremlin in, Moscow, as an act bf protest as they did in Canada. They more than likely would find themselves in the salt mines in Siberia, against their will. During the celebrations on Canada Day on Parliament Hill, some dissidents were carried off by the police. This obviously was done for their protection. - I believe that the group who went to Moscow:served to aggravate the sitldujion as it is now. The Soviets .anay interpret_ such action as a ploy of the West to have them lower their guard as a preparation for a surprise attack by the West. The Soviets are experts in using propaganda and human psychology in order to control the media. This is my reason for thinking that they might misinterpret the action of the group who went there, for negotiations. The only point the Canadians and the Russians agreed on was that they agreed to disagree. The decision was unanimous. I still maintain that the best deterrent is a strong defence, and we should concentrate on sea to shore missiles, launched preferably by submarines. Sincerely, N.J. Minaker peaceful Tn' parks are for people, not dogs says reader Dear editor; The other evening I strolled down to the race track to observe the Goderich fastball and slowpitch teams do their stuff. It was a beautiful evening and the stands were full of men and women, little boys and teenage girls in jeans and halter tops showing off their tans. Then I was sickened. A local resident strolled by with some silly little excuse for a dog. What kind of person would take a dog to the track and what if nature calls. Parks are for people, not dogs. This type of dispicable behaviour must be curbed before it reaches epidemic propor- tions. Some player could slide into home plate while just going up to bat. It ticks me off to see such ignorance. We don't want to see people flea our parks. Pete Henry It's ahoot! 133 picture perfect playgrounds for you to discover.
