TO, SIBERIA.
Sentenced to Four Years. in Prison
in Poland and Exile Afters
'wards.
Urgent and influen.tial alppeals
re being addressed to the British
vernment ,to take immediate ac-
e to secure the release of Muss
e Malecka, the young 'English -
maxi upon whore the brutal een-
eo of exile to Siberia has been
passed after a trial in Russia. A
deputation:of members of Peelle -
meet has waited upon Sir Edward
Grey to lay before him certain
facts.
The statement that Miss Malecka
will be exiled to Siberia for life was
confirmed by Reuter's Warsaw cor-
respondent, who telegraphed as fol-
lows
"According to an explanation re-
ceived from Mie Malecka's counsel,
the' sentence passed upon her in-
volvee the deprivation of all civil
rights, and, after the four years'
penal servitude, exile to Siberia
for life, In Siberia she will be
obliged to live where ordered to by
the police, without having the right
of leaving the prescribed locality."
This is the first time that such a
sentence has.been passed upon
A BRITISH SUBJECT,
and is causing, the deepest resent-
ment among all classes in Britain.
The announcement that Miss Ma-
leoka's real sentence is one of four
Years' penal servitude, to be fol-
lowed by exile to Siberia for life,
has kindled a great fire of indigna-
tion. What the horror of her posi-
tion will be is not even yet quite
understood.
There are no penal servitude pri-
&ons in Warsaw. She will there-
fore, in all probability, be sent di-
rect to one. of those infernos of
tyranny, the prisons in or near to
the penal settlement of Siberia it-
self, and will serve the four years
there beforeoho comes to the com-
parative enjoyment of such liberty
as is obtainable by the exiles.
She will be at the mercy of the
most inhuman creatures of Russian
brutality. To men this means often
madness or suicide. To a woman
whose whole soul is filled, with the
love of nature, and of freedom to
-roan. where she will, and whose
thief delight has been in the love
rhe always gathered to herself
among her fellows, the life is one
that is terrible to think about in
free England.
-"'Miss Malecka is undoubtedly a
British subject..
SHE WAS BORN IN ENGLAND,
and lived all her life there ; her fa-
ther was a naturalized Englishman,
her mother an Englishwoman. She
travelled with a British passport.
She was kept in prison for seven
months without a charge being
brought against her. No comproxn-
ising documents were found in her
rooms when she was ariieeted.
The evidence given to the court
against her would not have been
permitted in any other civilized
country. The chief evidence in sup-
port of the charge was clearly re-
futeelieand was given. by an ex -con-
vict, who only saves his life by act-
ing as informer.
Nothing was proved save that
Miss Malecka held Socialist views.
She hes been, therefore, condemned
simply on account of her harmless
personal convictions.
The sentence of four years' penal
servitude, with life-long exile to Si-
beria, is brutally severe even for
Russia.
THE OLD TIME HOSTESS.
Mistress of Ceremonies and Carver
-Announced Courses.
In the matter of old time eti-
quette at the table one recalls the
part played by the , lady of the
household, r In the 'eighteenth cen-
tury she was mistress of the cere-
monies --sire carved and she dealt
the while her lord merely "pushed"
the bottle, says the London Chroni-
cle.
She was also the menu, for if she
gave a dinner of several courses it
was her duty to announce to the
guests, seated expectantly, what
was toa bli
due appear at table. - A din-
ner
ner of one course rad she remarked
that "they' saw their dinner."
Then her powers of gentle per.sua-.
*ion came into .play. ' A guest when
he had stuffed sufficiently placed
the handles of his knife and fork
into his plater and the sight of a
knife in position was `the signal for
the hostess to inquire "if he would
please to have something more."
In the art of catering, o£ course,
the mistress ef any . country hou.so
was a past mistress. One recalls
Lady Mary Montagu's flight after
perfection under the wing of a pro
fessional carving master : "She took
three lessons a week, that she might
be perfect on her father's public
dos=s; when, in order to perform her
functions without interrelations,
she was forced to eat her own din-
ner alone an hoer ' or ee before-
hand,"
Each ;'tier the population of the
Russian Ample inereJasee by two
and a half millions.
By Toning Up the Stomach to do
Wel* the Wok Nat ure
Intends
It Should.
Indigestion should not he neglect-
ed for a marmot, for by depriving
the. body of its proper nourishment
through the food, the trouble
grows steadily worse.: Neither
should "st reulati+ng medicines, which
ruin the already weak ;stoma& by
making it work beyond its strength.,
be used; nor pre-digested food's,
wlii,ch do not excite a flo'rve of,the
digestive fluids, tend by (Heuer:. cause
the stomach to grow weaker. No-
where,is the tonin treatment by Dr.
Williams' .fink Pills more clearly
useful. The principle of this treat-
ment is to enable the stomach to do
its own work by building up the
blood and giving tone to the nerves,.
Wthen, these are once restored to
their normal health and indigestion
disappears .and :the cure is perma-
nent. Here is an 'experience' with
this treatment. Mr. John Brenen-
seal, Calgary, Alta., says: "For
years I was an almost constant euf
ferer from indigestion, and natur-
ally because there was mush nutri-
titins food which I could not eat ow-
ing to the pain and discomfort
which followed, I was becoming
muoh run down. I tried many medi-
cines, but none of ahem helped me
until I began the use of Dr. Wil-
liams' Pink Pills. After taking a
few boxes I was much better and
in the course of a couple of solitus
was quite well, and could 'eat any
food set before me."
If you are a sufferer from indi-
gestion, or any trouble due to bad
blood or weak nerves, you colli• be-

ing Dr. Williams' Pink Pills. Sold

CURSED THE CSAR.
Boy Preferred Death to Living in
Russia.
"Sooner than go back to Russia,
I will commit 'suicide."
This remarkable threat was ut-
tered by a lame Russian lad, aged
i8, who appealed before the Alien
Immigration Central Board against
a local board's decision torefuse
him admittance to England.
The boy gave the 'lame of Hirneb
Sehiren, _and through an interpre-
ter :said' that he had been on terms
of friendship with a police officer
in his own country who one day
asked him whether the would join
the army when his time came. He
replied, "May the Czar be ill so
long as I serve hire."
The policemaan, immediately in-
formedthe authorities, end as a re-
sult Schiren was sentenced to two
years' imprisonment. He had been
in prison two weeks, when he made
the warders drunk, and so ,man-
aged to escape.
. The Chairman—"Supposing you
were scot - back to Russia, would
you return to your parents?"
The lad replied that be iwould not
return, but would commit suicide.

WHY HE LIKED CHESS.
"You play chess a great deal?"
"Yes," 'replied the profound stu-
dent. "Chess is a great game."
"But does it rest the mind ?" "Of
course; that's the beauty +of it. You
can take a nice nap while you are
waiting for your opponent to figure
out his next move."

LOFTS TO LET.
Instances of the Stupidity of Na-
tives of Africa.
The natives of Central Africa are
described by the late Sir Henry M.
Stanley in his "Autobiography" as
being incredibly stupid. He tells,
for example, of one native who,
with another man, was sent in a
canoe across a river to fetch a com-
pany of men to camp. After wait-
ing an hour, Stanley went to the
river, where he found the two pad-
, dling each in an opposite direction,
and blaming the other for his stu-
pidity. They were in a passion of
excitement, and quite unable to
hear the advice of the men, across
the river, who • were bawlindirec-
tions to them how to manage their
canoe. '
Another stupid fellow was 'gen-
erally saved from punishment be-
cause his mistakes were so absurd.
One day we were floating down the
Congo., Near camping -time, as he
happened to be bowman, I bade
him stand by, and when I called
out, seize the grass on the bank to
stop the boat, In a little while we
same to a fit place, and I cried,
"Hold hard, Kirango 1"
"Please God, master," he re-
plied, and forthwith sprang on
shore and seized the grass with both
halide, while we, of course, warr
rapidly swept'en'down.stream.
The boat's Drew reared at the xi-
dienlouo sight. Nevertheless, his
stupidity cost the tired siren a hard
pull up -river, for not eiesey place
was available for a camp.

A Cure for Rheumatism.—A pain-

tism is caused by impurities in the
blood, the result of defective ac-
tion of the liver and kidneys. The
blood becomes tainted by the intro-
duction of uric acid, which causes
much pain in the tissues and in the
joints. Parmelee's Vegetable Pills
are known to have effected many
remarkable cures, and their use is
strongly recommended. A trial of
them will convince anyone of their
value.
