holds Strawberry Social
• The weatherman smiled
on another Strawberry
Social at The Livery this past
Saturday. Guests dropped in
at their own convenience
between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. to
enjoy strawberry treats.
This year„ three Summer
Canada students—Debbie
Shaddick, Karen Mandy and
Jodi Kuran—prepared and
co-ordinated the event,
adding their own particular
flare to the music and
decorations_ As well, many
friends of The Livery
generously baked shortcake,
picked berries and whipped
cream.
Serving the guests were
Anne Crocker, Leila Beier,
Heather MacDonald, Mary
Su MacLennan and Dorie
Ann MacLennan_ They were
rewarded with a ride around
town on the now resident
Livery surrey.
Among the guests at 4 p.m.
were Mrs. Rowan Baker and
her parents, Mr. and Mr&
Harold Wilkinson who were
visiting s•from Yorkshire,
England. Mr_ Wilkinson
consented to draw the names
of the lucky winners in The
\Livery's Big Apple Getaway
Draw. First prize went to

Martha is home from Florida
My, but it is good to be
back in the -*NORTH" coun-
try! Once we were out of
Essex County, the whole
world seemed changed_
Although we stay- OF1 401
until beyond Chatham. I was
glad to take the narrower
roads which were not busy.
The countryside seemed
more beautiful than ever.
somehow DIFFERENT. At
a different stage of growth,
the lush greens have chang-
ed the look of the whole coun-
tryside. And too. our trees
are a different SHAPE and a
greener green than what we
had been travelling in for
two days earlier_
At times I thought I was
lost - but I dincare - I was
head- northwest and I
couldn't miss 'r
GREEN is GREEN - so-
meone said, but once you
really see all the greens
around you - so, many dif-
ferent greens - everything
really looks WONDERFUL!
My little old car just PUR-
R -R -ED along the highway
and although it has spent all
but a year of its life in
Florida, I think it liked
where it was going. Isn't it
funny- or is jt just me how
we become attached to our
car - think of it as a friend -
or an enemy if it is rotten -
and even gi e it a NAME_
Dont tell aybedy - but 'my
last car was nlizbeth". This
one is "Suzie". Suzie is very
old - a '66„ well-built, healthy
and happy - especially when
gassed up - like some people
I /mow, full of pep and 'nark]:
to go! So, we had a pleasant
trip home_
Did I ever tell you of retur-
ning to Canada one time, fly-
ing in to the big Detroit Air-
port and seeing the whole of
Essex County laid out in
front of me like a giant map?
You could see every road,
see all the embroidered and
hemstitched farms, the
houses, other buildings,
trees - EVERYTHING -
standing on that niap like
something an architect had
just designed and built_ The
most wonderf sight 1 had
ever seen. Unbelievable.
I had lived in Essex Coun-
ty about 31 years, had
studied that map and travell-
ed through the county until I
think. I knew every corner of
it. The smallest county
bet. in Ontario. Also the most
southern and sunken of any
county I know. I think it is
just three or four hundred
feet -above sea level and has
nothing below it but him-
dreds of feet ot sAin I
Of course, Goderich is sit-
ting over the same layer of
salt, but it has some tough
day and some gnin: earth
under it, too_ And you can
BREATHE here! Fresh air!
- full of nnotsture from Lake
Huron to keep your skin nice
and sofft and unwrinkled!
The natives have beautif
skin_ But - to those who insist
on lying in the hot sun and
browning e and browning -
WATCH IT!
I haven't had a chance to
get around and get lest - yet,
but as soon as I get a few
minutes - MINUTES? - a
Couple of hours!
Sorry I'm such a poor
LETTER writer. I DO think
of you, so many off you, so
often - and wish you could
read my thoughts_ Someday
we will recognize mental
telepathy as a wonderful gift
- and tune in and enjoy -it. So,
if you were thinking of me,
too. I will know it works. En-
joy each day as it conies_
Love,
Martha.
PS. We came to town in
'45 and by adding a couple of
years to the five I spent in
England. you will know how
old I was last Thursday!
How about THAT! It is all in
thin. letter! -MR
