There is a vogue today for
spatial • terminology in,
regard to personal relation
ships) Be. it the marriage
relationship, within the
fay, at work or in the
realm of friendship, each
person has an area of private
space,; to be respected by
others. Naturally, the boun-
daries of that space vary
with the quality of the rela-
tionship.
Let someone try ag-
gressive oversell pressure,
be it produce or point of view
and we start to close the
frontiers! Should a child or
some situation touch us emo-
tionally, we can quickly
reveal our vulnerability.
It is common to speak of
`distance' and `closeness'
which despite the seeming
contradiction respectively
described "closed" and
"open" attitudes. It is not, of
course, a new insight we
have _gained, simply a fresh
recognition of human reality
readily evident in Bible
times.
When James wrote his let-
ter, he referred in chapter 2
to the matter of distancing in
church, with the poor and the
rich appropriately
separated; and he condemn-
ed it roundly. It was there in
Old Testament times,
especially regarding those
objects regarded as holy,
from which all but those per-
sons separated for God's ser-
vice must keep their
distance, 2 Samuel 6:6-12 il-
lustrates the consequences'
of infringement.
There was the incident of
the `'Titled.Lady" and "Dir-
ty Harry" of ' clearly
separated and defined social
circles, who found. common
space kneeling together
seeking the same Saviour.
The priest of the Jericho
,Road. distanced himself but
the Samaritan stepped right
out of his space and knelt
beside and cared. for the
stricken wayfarer. The af-
fluent Pharisee of Luke 7:36-
50 opened his house to Jesus,
but kept him at an intellec-
tual, religious and, social
distance and was eloquently
indignant when the wod an -
who was a sinner - infringed
on the personal space of

Jesus had a habit of
trespassing on the
theological space of the

ceremonial space controlled
by the Sadducees. It may be
a 'natter of perspective! If
Jesus truly revealed God,
His was a challenge to those

In caring, I make myself
present and available, but I
do not impose myself. Ge-
nuine caring respects
privacy. It respects the
boundaries of the other per-

other person space in which
to move. It does not intrude
into sensitive areas unless

because they look percep-

they convey the warmth of
their caring love. It takes
courage to bridge distances,
to escape beyond personal
insularity, for often it means
also a quiet waiting outside
someone's personal door,
like the Light of the World.
