rope is 'exhibit
The Huron Historic Gaol in Goderich will have a new
exhibit on display this year. A six-inch section of rope was
sent in recently by Mr. Ira Geiger, whose father, Owen
'was Huron County warden in 1911.
The piece of rope came from the rope used at the last
hanging at the gaol in, 1911, and was given to the county
warden by the.liangman himself.
This is the tenth year the gaol will be open. to "lawful"
citizens, after 130 years of inhabitation by`the other kind.
The gaol offers a unique octagonal structure, cell blocks
restored to represent actual cells from 1841 to 1972, and
the gaoler's house furnished with antiques from the turn
of the century.
The cupola at the top of the gaol has been completely
rebonstructed last year. The work was done by four people
hired through a Canada Community Development Project
grant. The gaol's curator, Harry Bosnell, hopes to hire up
to, seven summer workers this year using various
government employment programs.
Bosnell says there is still a lot of work to do at the gaol,
most of it restoration work. Student workers have been
restoring the stone walls enclosing the gaol yards. And the
woodwork on the window frames has to be refinished.
