GK OK OK GK GK GK OK K GK 0 5C 0 T ear a not `bre11 understand The Honourable • DennI .i0`110e11, Minister . to ,I info . mal, i.1t t0 tottohnow on April 20 to attend theNOLO West Huron Regional Federation informa tion Meeting. Due to your lack of sincerity andlack. of a rural agricultural background, I believe that you did notacom- prehend the true feeling of the crisis that faces agriculture today,. I, believe that living in a democracy is a privilege and to keep earning that privilege, an . enlightened Agrn uiture Minister should encourage his farmers to participate in the various democratic farm institutions and he should receive his direction from the grass roots. I tam the young farmer who referred to the 58 farm auction sales in the weekly Western Ontario Farmer with over 300 farm listings in one issue, only a small percentage of the total sales' and listings this spring. I stated that these farmers are not retiring with farm values down by 50 percent of what they were in this area • in 1981. They are going - broke, Dennis, and selling off machinery and land assets to stay in business. Many are barely hanging on by their fingernails. It was I that sold white beans for $11. per cwt., only 50 percent of the cost of pro- duction, last fall. It was I who paid over $350,000 in in- terest in my 12 years farm- ing. If this is not efficient, then show me the farmer with $350,000 in his savings account. I talked about the dilemma of borrowing money at 12 per cent on an operating loan and not being able to do anything but watch interest rates soar to 24 percent which killed my beef business and destroyed the family farm that my wife and I had built with pride and dignity. We have been robbed of both. farmers. The 20 percent of farmers who produce 80 per- cent of the food were en- couraged by government and banks with • ,`Good Business Decision": Now that ...interest rates and the • • economy have changed, the people who made these deci- sions for sound financial reason's are facing bankruptcy. The unfortunate part is that if something isn't clone to correct the situaltion, the resulting loss of value in our equity is eventually going to - level us all, even the cautious farmers. - Al fanners are directly irl> o f vC11Ye4I As the bottom forme loses kill and - machler.r and it eomes onto - the market, as we have witnessed In some areas, the Pis decrease by 50 per: cent. As this continuesto spread it reduces everyone s equity to the point where more people have insuffi- cient equity to finance, leading to more farm sales. Only .1 percent of the Pro- vincial Budget is spent on agriculture and yet agriculture is the primary industry, all. others are secondary. Each dollar of gross farm income - 7 dollars in gross community income. As our farmers fail so does the rest of society. You cannot protect the jobs of Massey Ferguson etc., unless the farmers can buy their products. If interest rates and farm prices con- tinue their devastation on the farms, the rest of the economy will crumble. The rest of society follows agriculture by 6 to 12 months so our troubles are their troubles. This province has short- changed farmers on credit accessibility, relying mostly en the federal government and private lending in- stitutions. Quebec provides 56 percent of its provincial budget as financial assistance to its farmers; Alberta 45 percent; Manitoba 21 percent and On- tario only 8 percent., For starters I would sug- gest interest rate relief under the Ontario Farm Ad- justment Assistance emergency program for financially distressed farmers should subsidize interest rates by four per- cent down to eight percent. The O.F.A.A.P. eligibility criteria should be relaxed to include farmers with less than 10 percent equity. Surface knowledge or psychological tricks may en- tice some people but if you want to make politics your profession, there is no firmer rock to buih1 on than a foun- dation of spiritual wisdom. Is this some naive pie in the sky? Not at all. In my estimation, that's where ge- nuine sincerity comes from, and F':ncerity is political power. It's more powerful than any learned technique. It's putting why ahead of how - the secret of successful Democracy. You've got the ball now Mr. Timbrell. Might I sug- gest that ydu move with it. Don't spin your tires, this is your opportunity to establish a successful political career. Cletus Dalton RR 3, Goderich Council discusses parking lot MITCHELL - As a result of council's discussion on the motion to amend the zoning bylaw, to allow Faust Brothers Hardware to ex- pand its store on May 16, another serious decision came into play. When discussion led to more off-street parking in the downtown area, Coun- cillor Alec Ellens was concerned that a number of cars are using Mitchell parking spaces all day as a depot, while they commute ' 0 0 0 0 0 IL kg kg 0 kg 0 kg 0 t to Stratford to work. Two spots sited were the public lot behind the library, and the bank parking lots. Councillor Ellens asked clerk -treasurer to go after the Ministry of Tran- sportation and Com- munications regarding an area for commuter parking. Don Eplett said the MTC has no jurisdiction within the town, but did have outside town limits. It would be up to the ministry to decide on where such an area could go. • Rom Estat* Ltd.
