Teen -Tones will disband
Dear Editor,
As leader of the Goderich
Teen Tones, I wish to thank
the people of Goderich for
the excellent support they
have given the choir during
the past nine years. It is with
regret that I have decided to
disband the Teen Tones at
this time.
During the past three
years, we have had a high
drop-out rate after about age
15, when the girls have sung
with us for only two years.
This is largely because of the
fine music program at
G.D.C.I. and the many ac-
tivities available in sports
and drama.
Members of the Goderich
Teen Tones have had many
interesting experiences in
choral singing, both in the
community and beyond, in-
cluding the Sound of
Goderich concerts, Harbour
LETTERS
Park concerts, Arts
Festival, London Kiwanis
Music Festival competition,
CNE troubadour singing,
and Oakville Tempus Choir
exchange concerts.
The choir has appreciated
financial assistance from the
Eastern Star and the
Goderich Rotary Club, and
the opportunity to sing , for
many other Goderich
organizations and churches.
A special expression of
thanks ,goes to North Street
United Church for the use of
the church parlour for week-
ly rehearsals.
When Veen Tones began in
1974, G.D.C.I. had one band,
Township Council
issues permits
Accounts totalling met
than $60,000 were ordere
paid when Goderich
Township Council met in
regular session May 16. Of
this amount, $50,000 was for
Huron County tax advances
and $9,600 - was for road
superintendent payroll.
Building permits were
issued to Tudor Wain for a
feed storage building on lot
31, concession 2; to Tom
Flynn for a storage shed on
lot 30, concession 3; to
George Tipert for a two car
garage on lot 19 and 20, plan
23; and to Ken Sowerby to
demolish a wood shed on lot
12, concession 3.
Council decided that Doug
Splan should submit a new
application for a building
permit instead of a renewal
of a renewalfor a building
permit for a residence.
William Jongejan was
present at the meeting. to
request a variance in the
M.D.S.. relative to the
building of a liquid manure
tank. Council instructed Mm
to obtain the usual cer-
tificate of compliance from
theO.M.A:F. office.
By-law 3, 1983, a by-law to
establish a tile drain
debenture on four owners,
was given three readings
and passed.
Council agreed to a $1,000
donation to Clinton Public
Hospital to purchase , ad-
ditional
dditional emergency equip-
ment.
Doug Culbert was present
at the meeting to enquire
Into the possibility of ob-
taining a permit for a
residence on plan no. 502.
Council agreed that the
services as specified under
the development agreement
should be installed before
such a permit is issued.
R.K. Wurtele and Peter
Wurtele and C.R. Kiar were
also present at the meeting
to discuss the feasability of
opening Mill Road up to
public use. Due to the ex-
pense in survey,
registration, etc., • council
was reluctant to proceed
with the cost of such a
program for the limited use
that the said road would
receive. A motion was
passed that thetownship
would be agreeable to pay
one=third of the costs 1
volved in survey, legal fee
registration, etc in: an at
tempt to clarify t status o
the road in que ion if Mr
Wurtele would ay th
balance.
Judge addresses
Goderich Rotary Club
"More changes have taken
place in the law in my ten
years in Goderich than in my
23 years of practice in
London," Judge F.G. Carter
told Rotary Club members at
their meeting on Tuesday.
Judge Carter was called to
the bar in1950. ,
He cited changes in the
criminal code that have
abolished the grand jury in
favour of preliminary
hearings held by judges.
Judge-Ca-rter-has-heat d an
average of 16 divorce cases
per month for the last 10
years in the Goderich Court
House. On this topic, he
noted the changes brought
by the Family Law Reform
Act which permits divorce
on the grounds of mental
cruelty and defines cruelty
not as what the judge would
see as cruelty but what is
—perceived as et ueltyrby the -
complainant.
Under this Act as well, he
noted the difficulty in
dividing buginess assets
upon divorce', where the wife
supported her husband
during his education which
permitted him to enter a
profession that was the
source of their assets.
Under the Succession Law
Reform Act, Judge Carter
noted the acceptance of wills
written and signed by a
person but without the
previously required wit-
nesses.
The judge reviewed some
recent changes brought
about by the Children's Law
Reform Act and the Charter
of Rights. He described the
complexity of the law by
.interesting ex-arnples4rom_.
his recent court schedule,
including the instructing of a
Public Institutions Panel,
the selection. of , a-,,ju ;...nil-,
the probate process
regarding the handling of
estates by trustees.
Judge Carter noted that
his court calendar is fully
booked until the end of July.
He closed with the comment
tl oun y o
be replaced by District
Courts based in London.
Norm Pickell, well-known
Goderich lawyer, thanked
Judge Carter noting the
respect in which he is held by
local lawyers because of his
well reasoned judgements
that are seldom overturned
on appeal.
and no active choir. Now it
has a concert band, a stage
band, an intermediate band,
a concert choir, and a jazz
choir.
So let us not feel sorry that
the Teen Tones are disban-
ding, but rather, be happy
that our young people have
so many fine musical oppor-
tunities at Goderich Col-
legiate.
Yours truly,
Irla Stewart,
Director of Goderich Teen
Tones.
