Some of these shoes were roughly made and uncomfortable. Tin was tacked on the bottom of the shoes to make them last longer. When the weather turned cold hay or straw was put in the shoes to keep the feet warm. Many wooden shoes were made for Canadian soldiers to take home after the Second World War. In 1982, 80,800 pair of wooden shoes were exported to the EEC (European Economic Community) in Europe alone. If the Dutch can convince Russia and America on the same idea, the in- dustry can and will continue to blossom. Do you want to know more about wooden shoes and or wooden shoemaking? Mr. John Krans, born on a farm near Drachtse Compagnie (Drachten area in Freisland), the Netherlands, will be attending the Klompen Feest with a special display on wooden shoes. His first trade was the skill of handmade wooden shoes. Later he went into the machine -made wooden shoe business with a friend. He now lives in Breslau, a small town between Kitchener and Guelph, and works as a carpenter renovating and building homes. After he moved to Canada he still did some shoemaking as a hobby. Therefore, he still has the equipment to make the shoes, but he does not make them anymore. Mr. Krans has a wealth of personal experience and knowledge that he is willing to share with everyone. Wear your "klompen" and be sure to visit the display. Welcome to Klompen Feest! John and Joan wish you all the best! iI°N PIZZA FAST SERVICE '4 LB.
