HARRY VRIEND, TRINITY CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH On Sunday, May 22, the church will celebrate the an- niversary of the Spirit's. coming. We will not celebrate a new Pentecost, but the One Pentecost that God gave to the church. • It is tempting to concen- trate on the spectacular (by Standards) r; when r one pays, attention to Pentecost. It is not surprising that on Pentecost a lot of emphasis is given to the miraculous signs that accompanied the coming of the Spirit: the sound of the wind, the sight of the fire and the hearing of strange tongues. What about the results of the Spirit's coming? What about the signs of the Spirit's presence in the ,church? What is different in the church after the Holy Spirit comes? One. notable difference is that the apostles began to preach. Peter and others proclaimed the "mighty works". of God in Jesus Christ. They were excited about the gospel, and with SUPERIOR MEMORIALS ESTABLISHED OVER 50 YEARS Goderich Area Representative ROBERT McCALLUM 11 CAMBRIA ROAD GODERICH Clinton Area Representative MICHAEL FALCONER 153 HIGH STREET CLINTON 482-9441 J ANNOUNCING PRYDE MONUMENTS LTD. Churches today can be instructed. When the world gets excited about everything and anything, and when the church is tempted by the mighty winds of change, then let us note this clear sign of the Spirit's presence in the church. This sign is a great interest, even a great excitement about the gospel. There was such an excitement about the good news that the church preach- ed and spoke gladly about the gospel. A second sign of the Spirit's presence was the repentance by the people. Over 3,000 people repented. The spirit still works that way: by preaching and by repentance. A lot of people would like the Spirit to work another way; but Pentecost reminds us there can be no renewal without repentance. Much more is required than a new face on the pulpit or a new coat of paint on the building. In a world where there are many strategies for church renewal, the Biblical strategy is still through repentance. A third sign of the Spirit's presence was the fellowship in Christ. The walls between. all sorts of people broke down when the Spirit came. When the believers realized that they had Christ in com- mon with each other, they also decided to have many material'things in common with each other.' When the Spirit is present today, walls are still broken down, and people find their true brothers and . sisters, among people who serve the Lord. Does the Spirit still work that way? Indeed, He does. He leads the church to preach boldly; He leads the listeners to repent; and He still builds a close fellowship around God's gift of His Son.
