over last year
According to figures put
out by the Goderich building
department, more people
have taken out building
permits so far this year than
they did last year
There have been 51
building permits issued
during the first four months
of this year. In the same
period Last year there were
only 28 permits issued.
The total estimated cost
for the 51 permits is almost
$1.5 million. This compares
to $1.1 million last year.
The monthof April was by
far the most active this year,
with 26 permits issued and
an estimated total cost of
over $1 million.
Thirty of the permits
issued from January to April
were for minor residential
repairs. The cost for these
projects varies from $1,000 to
$10,000.
The biggest project so far
this year is the renovation of
the People's store on the
Square. The cost of the
renovations is estimated at
$240,000.
The Bank off Commerce on
the Square also has plans to
renovate their building, and
a third major project is the
addition to the North Castle
Marina, on Huckins Street.
The building inspector of
Goderich, Doug Harrison,
says the figures do not
necessarily mean that this
will be a good year for
construction in Goderich. He
says that although there
have been a lot more permits
issued, the projects are
smaller.
Last year, construction at
the Goderich pollution plant,
the hospital and the mines
cost $750,000 each. Con-
struction for the entire year
was valued at around $3
million.
Harrison says that there
are no projects this year that
can compare in size to those
three from last year.
He says, however, that
more people are getting
permits, and this might be
due to any number of
reasons, such as falling
interest rates, or cheaper
building materials.
But to really insure a
growth in construction in
Goderich, says Harrison,
there need to be some really
big contracts. "If we can get
some factories in town, the
houses will follow."
Renovations are just beginning on the People's store, on the Square in Goderich. This is the
biggest construction project in Goderich this year, with an estimated cost of $240,000.

"I don't care one way vi

"I feel it would be of benefit
to the town for me to attend
but if council doesn't see fit
to pay the registration fee, I
won't attend."
Councillor Don Wheeler
pointed out that the motion
called for council to pay only
the $60 registration fee for
Mrs. Doherty and that her
expenses would be paid by
her husband.

margin with Jim Searls
