This represents an 8.8 per cent increaSe rn funding over last year. • All hospitals in Ontakio, received a 7.8, per cent increase this year based Wan inflationary adjustment. Those hospitals with 50 or fewer active beds received an additional one per cent increase. Alexandra Marine and General, with exactly 50 active -beds(not including chronic and psychiatric), qualified for this extra one Per cent. Administrator Elmer Taylor estimates that the local hospital has received about $200,1100 in ad- ditional funding over the last four years by keeping its number of active beds to 50 or less. Taylor says the reason this year's surplus will not be as great as last year's is because of salaries required for additional staffing in the Intensive Care Unit and physiotherapy department and also because of the payment of outstanding sick banks for the registered nurses at the hospital. These sick banks represent accumulated sick time prior to the in- troduction of a long term disability plan for the nurses. *Completely Open * Weekly Payment Plan for • our Renewal .Mortgages (Reduces lifetime oi mortgage in half.) The Huron -Perth Separate School Board approved a $7,622,314 budget for 1983 at its April 25 meeting. This is an increase of 1153 per cent over last year's budget of $6,783,402. The local share increased from. $1,295,800 in 1982. Chairman of the finance committee trustee Ron Marcy of Stratford reported that the board will be able to hold its increase to 10 per cent because of a $46,000 surplus last year and because one mill raises $900 rnore this year than last year. One mill raises $24,400 in Huron and Perth for separate school pur- poses. "This is due to the fact that our assessment base has increased by close to $1 million (thisincrease in assessment, which is becoming an annual event, shows that the support for our system continues to grow)," stated Mr. Marcy. The finance committee chairman,. pointed out that even if the board kept its expenditures equal to 1982, the 1983 budget would reflect a 6.04 per cent increase. This means the Ministry of Education sets a Milt rate that determines the amount the board has to collet from taxpayers before the amount of grant to be received from the Ministry is determined. In 1982 this local requirement was set at 4.455 equalized Weal mills and in 1983 increased -to 4.724 equalized local mills. "In siffiple terms this means that even if the board • kept its expenditures equal to 1982 - in other words ab- solutely no increase in expenditure - we would be .forced to increasetaxes by 6.04 percent," stated Mr. Marcy. n Starting with that increase, the Huron -Perth board r inereases over which it has , trol: The: fin .,,ne.copimittee Chairman outlined them as • - An increase of 10 'per cent on general energy costs; , , • • - SeuePperCOnt sales tax on all school materials, including textbooks which have risen in cost by a minimigop per cent;, „: , A ' qminerease of 22 per cent in the cost, of ...
