coaching job at University
It was a bittersweet
nnoment ter Bill Wilkinson
when he led his Western
Michigan Broncos into the
Central Collegiate Hockey
Association series recently.
Wilkinson, formerly of
Goderich, is now the head
coach at Western Michigan
after several years with the
Bowling Green Falcons. And
Wilkinson may have been
slightly . envious as he wat-
ched the team he pain-
stakingly helped build defeat
his own charges 4-0 and 4-1.
Wilkinson spent three
Years building the hockey
team at BowlingGreen a
team that has progressed
through his dedication. In
the year Wilkinson has been
at Western Michigan their
record has hem nine: wins.
against 15 losses while his
old charges, the Falcons
posted an 18-4-2 mark, just a
few points from top ranking
in the collegiate ranks.
In Kalamazoo,. Wilkinson
inherited a mediocre team,
far below the- calibre of the
team he helped build in
Bowling Green. Most of the
team's scoring punch left
before Wilkinson arrived and
he is now faced 'with a
mammoth rebuilding job.
In a . recent interview,
Wilkinson admitted his team
lacked scoring punch . which
forced him to implement a
defensive system.
The previous season,
Wilkinson helped Bowling
Green to a 27-13-2record.
good enough to win the
CP -114 championship, and he
appeared destined • for his
first head coaching position.
He had helped build BG
into a national power and
also assisted in , North
Dakota, leaving a year
before they won the first of
its two . NCAA cham-
pionshipS..He also helped at
St Lawrence university.
;bast. year, on March.. 29,
Wilkinson accepted;. the job
at°_ Western Michigan
University as the time came
for him to build a team of his
own. He doesn't have the
talent right now, but con-
sidering his track record,
Goderich's Bill Wilkinson
will make his .mark in
collegiate hockey as a head.
