' ,,N'othtng is monotonous ,about a mouochromattc floral display! By . selecting different • flowers. Of the same color family and arranging them by height and foliage ten • tures, a favorite color takes on new excitement. Most flower colors come in a wide range of shades, from dark to light, and varying hues in between. Rose, for example, • can be found In subtly- c.lored pet:u.nias or begonias, and also in the vivid zinnia, Wild Cherry' or rich geranium, Deep Rose Flash. Careful selection can create the same single -color effect in shades of blue, yellow, white,' pink and cor- al. To create a monochromatic' bed in your garden, select your favorite color and then begin thinking aboutdifferent plants available in this shade. A blue garden could include petunias, ageratum, pan- sies, salvia, . verbena and delphinium. The larger your bed, the greater the number of different• flowers and color shades which .can be accom- modated ccommodated attractively. Smaller beds will be more attractive with fewer color and plant difference. Height differences add another dimension to creating a single -color spec- tacular. your than lining up your plants with the tallest in the back, place tall varieties in the center, and plan a gradual h decrease tp the: small.boreightder flowers.. That Way the bed is beautiful fromall angles, To illustrate the joys of single -color flower clisplays, the summer gardens of the Geo. J. Ball, Inc., hors. ticulture wholesalers, featured eight beds, each made up a single color. Each variety was available from seed, or as started plants at garden centers. Hire a plant sitter Your vacation plans are almost complete. You are wondering what to do with the houseplants you've pampered all year. Burke McNeill, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food extension hor- ticulturist, says there are a number of solutions to your plant sitting problems. The best solution is to find an accommodating neighbor to water the plants while you are away. If you are . for- tunate enough to find such a plant sitter, leave watering instructions, especially if the person is inexperienced with plants. "It doesn't take long to kill a plant by over -watering," • he says. Another solution is to put the plants in about two in- ches of water in the bathtub or kitchen sink. If there is no natural light in the room it is advjable to leave a light on. Using this method, Mr. McNeill says plants can survive for about two weeks. You can also make your own automatic watering system using' clear plastic bags. First water the plants thoroughly and insert two stakes, slightly taller than the plant, into each pot. Put the bag over the top of the plant and fasten to the pot rim with a rubber band. This will allow water condensing inside the bag to drain into the soil. Mr. McNeill says once in the bags, the plants should be set in a cool spot away from direct sunlight. This will provide an ideal . en-., vironment for houseplants for about two weeks. However, this method Is not recommended for soft plants, such as fibrous begonias. This type of plant may rot because of excess moisture. For longer v ations, there are se automatic wAteri " evices available at garden .centers and other plant outlets.
