play
considers
death
The Goderich District
Collegiate Institute Drama
Club is working on Thornton
Wilder's Our Town for this
year's major production.
The play takes place in the
small town of Grover's
Corners, New Hampshire,
around the time of the turn of
the century.
The first of three acts
begins by introducing the
audience to Grover's Cor-
ners and two of its leading
families: the Webbs and the
Gibbs.
Grover's Corners is a little
bit of every town, or every
town is a little bit of Grover's
Corners. All of us can
somehow associate
ourselves or someone we
know with each character on
stage.
The second act fuses the
main families with the
marriage of George Gibbs
and Emily Webb. The
wedding scene promises to
be familiar to almost
everyone. If you're prone to
tears, be prepared to cry.
The third and final act
completes the story with a
visit to the cemetery a few
years, and a few deaths,
after the wedding. Most
subtly, the audience is asked
to reflect on the meaning of
death, but evert more so, on
the significance of life itself.
