On Friday even the
Q„ddfetlovra aE Goderich
celebrated the 89th an-
niversary of'the institution. of
the Orden on..this continent.
The members and -their
relatives attended in large
numbers, and •at 9 O'clock
quartettes were round 22
tables, playing progressive
euchre.
The street. watering cart
was ordered oat on,Tuesday
last. by Mayor Macklin, the
dust being so plentiful in the
high wind as to cause many
complaints • by merchants
and others on and around the
Square.This is certainly a
record start, and the
question was again raised as
to the possibility of one
wagon doing the work
properly during the season.
A citizen on the Square,
pointing to his counters
which were covered with a
layer of dust, made the
suggestion that a second
wagon of the one horse
variety, such as are used in
the cities, could be procured
at a small cost, and the work
hired out to someone.
Suckers are very plentiful
in all our rivers this year.
Last week two professional
men and three merchants of
Lucknow journeyed to Pine
River on a sucker fishing
expedition, afid returned
home with a pretty good load
- of fish, we mean.

The provincial ridings of
North Huron and South
Bruce were amalgamated
into one riding to be known
as Huron -Bruce.
There was a month-old
kitten in Goderich with six
toes on each of three feet and
the regulation five on the
fourth. It belonged to Mrs.
Hunt on Picton Street.
Many wrestling fans from
Goderich and district wat-
ched Scotty McDougall
triumph over Bill Mid,
dlekauf in a very rough bout
in London. A London
newspaper referred to
McDougall as, "the
Goderich man with the
famous smile."

A 1,300 bed hospital for
retarded children - the
equivalent, indirectly, of an
industry for Goderich of
considerable magnitude -
was assured on Wednesday
evening. Speaking at the
Huron Progressive Con-
sery at ive
on-servative nomination
meeting at Clinton, Hon.
W.A. Goodfellow, provincial
cabinet minister, said that
the government had already
purchased some 300 acres of
land, lots 13 and 14, in
Goderich Township. The lots
are located on the Blue
Water Highway, a little more
than two miles from the
town's southern boundary.
Best ever!
Those two words sum up
the ninth annual Young
Canada Week Pee Wee
hockey tournament, which
reached its climax Saturday
night when Stratford's little,
"iron men" defied tradition
to win the grand cham-
pionship.
Though they were defeated
5-3 by Stratford in the grand
championship round
Saturday, Goderich Pee
Wees gave home town fans
plenty to cheer about. Ted
Williams' Lions won the "B"
series title by nipping
Tillsonburg 7-6 Friday
evening.

The construction ora new
police station in Goderich
may become top priority for
Goderich Town Council in
1979 if the Goderich Police
Commission has its way.
The existing police station
on West Street has recently
been inspected by an in-.
surance company, the
Goderich Fire Department
and a public institutions
inspection committee. The
police station originally
housed a theatre and is more
than 70 years old. All three
inspections came to the
same conclusion that the
station was not fit for the
purposes it was being used
for. Some conditions of the
existing station have been
condemned.
After the inspections the
Goderich Police Commission
went on record as requesting
that the town build a new
police station.
Huron County's 274 high
school teachers ended a 31
day strike April 12, voting
205 to 47 to ratify their 1977-78
and 1978-79 contracts. The
acceptance of the pacts
permitted schools in the
county to re -open for the first
time since February 22.
