in the Mission Hospital in Zaire. Also pictured are (left to

Presbyterial learns about Zaire
"Love in Action" was the
theme of a well -attended
special event held in North
Street United Church,
Goderich, for the Huron -
Perth Presbyterial of United
Church Women.
A singalong was led by
Mrs. Erla Stewart. The
ladies were welcomed by
President, Mrs. Grace Pym
of H.R. 1, Centralia and Mrs.
Ila Worsell of the local chur-
ch.
The guest speaker was in-
troduced by Mrs. Lois
McGill. She was Miss Laurie
Scaldwell of London, a
fourth year medical student
recently returned from Zhire
where she spent four months
through the Medical Elec-
tives Program which our
Presbyterial supports.
She showed slides and told
of many very interesting ex-
periences. The hospital
where she worked most of
the time employed 166 peo-
ple. They trained Africans to
be nurses which was a four-
year program following high
school.
Mrs. Scaldwell said that
tuberculosis is a big problem
and there are a lot of burn
victims because of their
open fires. Contaminated
water is the cause of a lot of
illness.
She spoke of travelling to
some remote places and ex-
plained it took six hours to go
60 miles.
In . Zaire they performed
operations with light from a
car headlight and car bat-
tery and sterilized their in-
struments in a pressure
cooker over an open fire,
Some of the people had been
waiting up to 20 yearsfor an
operation:
Miss Scaldwell wants to go
back to Zaire because of the
people. She said "God has
loved us and made us his am-
bassadors to show the world
his love.
At the meeting special
music was provided by "The
Teentones" (a 30 voice choir
of teenage girls from
Goderich) under direction of
Mrs. Erla Stewart.
Courtesies were given by
Mrs. Alice Cumming of
Stratford.
The ladies had a period of
refreshments, they visited
the book room and also had
an opportunity toview the in-
formative displays on the
"South Pacific". Following -
the recess the 1983 executive
was • introduced by Mrs.
Doris Zurbrigg. After the in-
troduction "Our Campsite
Experience" was announced
•for June 16, 1983, at Camp
Menesetung.
The evening concluded
with worship conducted by,
the ladies of South -Huron
Region: Elaine Moore,'
Marlene Brenner, soloist
and Irene Kennedy, pianist
all of Grand Bend.

REV. GEDCKE
While sitting at my office
• desk, pondering my subject
matter for publication in the
Signal -Star, I reflected on a
serious discussion I had this
week with my Grade 8 pupils
in our regular Religious
'Education class at Robert-
son Memorial.
A pupil's concern centered
on„the possibility of war and
global holocaust. I found out
a number of other students
were likewise deeply moved
with the thoughts and fears
of national and individual
destruction caused by a
nuclear war. I assured the
class that, while wars are in-
evitable, worldwide
slaughter need not be feared
if one is truly a Christian
committed to the Bible.
God's Word teaches that
our world will not be
destroyed by nuclear war.
God is preserving our planet
for the Millennial reign of
peace by His Son, Jesus
MINISTER'S STUDY
Christ. And this is my topic
today: Jesus Christ, the
King of Kings and Lord of
Lords, is corning back to
earth again to establish His
1000 -year Government of
peace and tranqulity.
The real issue needing to
be confronted by earth's in-
habitants is not WHEN will
He return to this earth, bttt
HOW CAN I BE READY TO
MEET HIM? During a visit
by a former Prince of Wales
to --tile ..Midlands, a certain
family received an unex-
pected visit by the Prince.
The following day, the hus-
band shared his experience
with his friends: "I never ex-
pected him, nor did my wife.
The house was untidy, and I
hadn't washed. We shall
never forgive ourselves. If
we had known he was com-
ing, we should have been
ready for him.”
Of a truth, the Prince of
Peace is coming again in
power to this earth of ours,
and we know not the day or
the hour. The challenging
question remains, 'Am I
ready to meet Him?'. The
answer lies in one's personal
decision to give his life over
to Christ as Saviour .and
Lord.
Being ready for Christ's
return to earth is not enough.
True Christians, those who
have confessed their need of
the Saviour and have put
their full trust in Christ to
save them from their sin, are
not just READY for His
Return. They are busying
themselves with sharing the
Good News to their world in
need. A question was put to
'Mr. W.E. Blackstone, author
of the book JESUS IS COM-
ING, as to whether he was

still looking for the Lord to
return.. His reply was: "I'm
looking for the Lord every
day, but I'm hustling to get
the chores done before He
gets here." What a tremen-
dous challenge for those pro-
fessing to be Christians!
Let's be busy for Him. It's
time for the real Christian to
stand up and be counted.
Stahid up, get busy with the
exciting work of sharing
Jesus Christ, the living Lord,
to those who are still hurt by
sin's crippling con-
sequences.
Jesus is coming again,
make no mistake about it.
The challenge is un-
mistakable: be ready and
then ... get busy!
