HARBOR REPORT The Algorail arrived light for salt from Hamilton on April 12 and cleared harbor for Parry Sound the same day. The Algoway arrived light for salt from Sarnia on April 16 and cleared harbor for Milwaukee the next day. The Labradoc arrived light for grain from Thunder Bay on April 15 and cleared harbor for Newfoundland the same day. The Lake Winnipeg arrived light for corn from Quebec on April 18 and cleared harbor for Windsor and Baie Comeau the same day. Last year the Ontadoc made more visits to Goderich than any other grain ship Ship has special features BY SKIP, GILLHAM The N.M. Paterson & Sons Ltd. fleet dates from the early part of this cen- tury. Their ships have been coming to Goderich for years. • Two features best identify the Paterson vessels. All have a white "P" on a black stack and most have "DOC" names. This is short for "Dominion Of Canada". The exceptions are their ships Paterson and Senator of Canada. Last season their Ontadoc made eight visits here and this was the most by a grain ship during the 1982 season. Although this Ontadoc is 'a fairly recent addition to the Great Lakes fleet, the name. has been a familiar one on the inland seas for many years. The first Ontadoc was built at Chicago in 1903. FILM DEVELOPING sportation Co. in the early years.. Her name in those days was R.L. Ireland. • In 1913 this vessel joined the Interlake Steamship Co. and was renamed Sirius. She remained in their colors un- til 1926. By then her 7,000 ton capacity was no longer con- sidered adequate for the ore trade. She then moved to Canadian registry as Ontadoc as part of the ,Paterson fleet. Now grain • became Ontadoc's chief cargo as she usually hauled out of the Lakehead to the Georgian Bay ports. Trips to Goderich were also part of her duties. In the later years Ontadoc earned her keep running coal to Toronto and Hamilton. By 1970 she was considered expendable and in mid- October took one last cargo of grain to Quebec City. She remained idle at Sorel until 1972. That year she was resold for overseas scrap- ping and was towed to Izmiri, Turkey. The old hull arrived October 30 and was soon dismantled. The current Ontadoc was built at Collingwood in 1975. Interestingly her dimensions of 355 feet, by 49 feet by 29 feet are smaller than those of the first Ontadoc. She had been 436 feet long, 50.3 feet at the beam and 24 feet in depth. Even the carrying capacity of the new ship is a little less at 6700 tons deadweight. The current Ontadoc has other advantages. She is more efficient to run with a 4,000 horsepower diesel, rather than an old coal fired steam plant. She can also go places her predecessor could not go. In August 1979, for example; she loaded ben- . tonite in Chicago for delivery to Holland. Deep sea duties are within her capabilities. The current Ontadoc began her career April 24, 1975, and took steel from Sault Ste. Marie to Duluth as a first cargo: She then loaded grain at Thunder Bay for delivery to Goderich and Collingwood. Ontadoc often calls here and we anticipate further visits in 1983. CIVIC CORNER The Committee of Adjustment will meet Wednesday, April 20 at 7 p.m. in the Mayor's office.
