LOOKING
BACK
Mrs. James Greenway,
Huron Road, had a good
hatch of Plymouth chicks on
Saturday last.
On Tuesday night of this
week thetown and collegiate
football teams played an -
interesting game , which
ended by a score of 1-0 in
favor of the town team who
proved too strong for the
scholars.
Painter Snazel has the first
outside spring coat of mint
on the dwelling of Mrs.
Angus, Victoria Street. The
nein will be Dr. Clark's
.house on the corner of
Newgate and Victoria
Streets. -
The Goderich Baseball
Club was organized for the
season of 1908 last Wed-
nesday evening. There is
talk of forming a league with
Blyth, Wingham • 'and
I,ucknow so there will be
good baseball this season.
Transients had to cut wood
in order to obtain a meal
ticket this week from the
Goderich Welfare Board.
Most of the boys, however,
did not know—or did not
profess to know—much about
bucking wood. 'Fire Chief.
George Beacom, disgusted
with the performance of
some of these novices,
started an, instruction class.
Sometimes he forgot himself
and cut half the transient's '
quarter -cord quota before he
got slowed down. Noneof the
transients objected to this.
A fire started in Albert
Leitch's barn on the Sauble
Line last week when Victor
Powell,who was living at the
Leitch farm, slipped from a
hay mow while carrying a
lantern.
Members of the Goderich
Public School Board are
divided on the question of
whether teachers' salaries
should be reduced or not.
A move to grant salary
increases of $200 each to the
principal and vice-principal
of GDCI failed to win support
at the April meeting of the
ODCI Board. Last year
Principal A.R. Scott
received a salary increase of
$2,000 bringing his total
salary to $9,000. Also last
year, vice-principal Boyce
was given a salary increase
of $1,500 bringing his total
salary to $7,500,
An) unusually' com-
prehensive program geared
to bring afore tourists into
Goderich, has been launched
by Goderich Junior Chamber
of Commerce. The com-
mittee has contracted to
publish two pages
publicizing Goderich in a
Stratford Chamber of
Commerce folder being
issued in conjunction with
the Stratford Festival.
Angered by the alarming
number of fires and rats
which the town garbage
dump has been producing
this spring, 20 citizens who
live in that vicinity sent a
protest to town council.
Meeting Friday night,
council responded to the
petition by voting to spend
$948 to extend a water pipe to
the dump. This, it is ex-
pected, will control the fires.

The Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital Board has
decided to close 16 beds at
the hospital and reduce the
full-time staff by as many as
14 employees in an effort to
meet their 197849 budget
allocation from the Ministry
of Health.
The Goderich Area
Housing Action Committee is
recommending to_ Goderich
Town Council that the local
firm of Hill and Borgal be
hired as the consulting ar-
chitects for the proposed
senior citizens' facility on
West Street.
