LOOKING BACK 75 YEARS AGO Mrs. James Greenway, Huron Road, had a good hatch of Plymouth chicks on Saturday last. On Tuesday night of this week thetown and collegiate football teams played an - interesting game , which ended by a score of 1-0 in favor of the town team who proved too strong for the scholars. The nein will be Dr. Clark's .house on the corner of Newgate and Victoria Streets. - The Goderich Baseball Club was organized for the season of 1908 last Wed- nesday evening. There is talk of forming a league with Blyth, Wingham • 'and I,ucknow so there will be good baseball this season. 50 YEARS AGO Transients had to cut wood in order to obtain a meal ticket this week from the Goderich Welfare Board. Most of the boys, however, did not know—or did not profess to know—much about bucking wood. 'Fire Chief. George Beacom, disgusted with the performance of some of these novices, started an, instruction class. Sometimes he forgot himself and cut half the transient's ' quarter -cord quota before he got slowed down. Noneof the transients objected to this. A fire started in Albert Leitch's barn on the Sauble Line last week when Victor Powell,who was living at the Leitch farm, slipped from a hay mow while carrying a lantern. Members of the Goderich Public School Board are divided on the question of whether teachers' salaries should be reduced or not. 25 YEARS AGO, A move to grant salary increases of $200 each to the principal and vice-principal of GDCI failed to win support at the April meeting of the ODCI Board. Last year Principal A.R. Scott received a salary increase of $2,000 bringing his total salary to $9,000. Also last year, vice-principal Boyce was given a salary increase of $1,500 bringing his total salary to $7,500, An) unusually' com- prehensive program geared to bring afore tourists into Goderich, has been launched by Goderich Junior Chamber of Commerce. The com- mittee has contracted to publish two pages publicizing Goderich in a Stratford Chamber of Commerce folder being issued in conjunction with the Stratford Festival. Angered by the alarming number of fires and rats which the town garbage dump has been producing this spring, 20 citizens who live in that vicinity sent a protest to town council. Meeting Friday night, council responded to the petition by voting to spend $948 to extend a water pipe to the dump. This, it is ex- pected, will control the fires. 51fEARS AGO The Alexandra Marine and General Hospital Board has decided to close 16 beds at the hospital and reduce the full-time staff by as many as 14 employees in an effort to meet their 197849 budget allocation from the Ministry of Health. The Goderich Area Housing Action Committee is recommending to_ Goderich Town Council that the local firm of Hill and Borgal be hired as the consulting ar- chitects for the proposed senior citizens' facility on West Street.
