The old
guys win
The Goderich Midgets challenged the 1971-72 Midget team (the Goderich Sailors) to a
friendly game of hockey on Friday, April 8. Although the Sailors are quite a bit older than

Skating Club awards trophies
The Goderich Figure
Skating Club finished its
skating season on March
16th. The club is proud of all
its skaters and their ac
complishments from Debbie
Horton (Canadian Novice
Dance Champion) to the
youngest pre-schoolers.
The individual and group
efforts along with excellent
coaching from Fran Brady ,
and Marg Dupee has shown.
in the skaters' great show-
ings in this year's competi-
tions.
Trophys were awarded by
the club at the end of the
season to the following
skaters.
In power skating: The
Garb and Gear Trophy for
most improved junior power
skater was presented to
DavidBogie. The L. & S. Jef-
frey Trophy for most im-
proved senior power skater
was presented to Drew
Macauley. A gold medal for
the power skater showing
the most desire and
discipline was presented to
Robbie McGraw. •
Medals were also given to
the following power skaters
who have successfully com-
pleted all the seven Power
Skating Badges; Chris
O'Neill, Ryan Fagan, Justin
Fagan, Lonnie.:Rumig and
Glenn Woodard.
Trophies were also award-
ed to many of the club's
figure skaters.
The Sutherland Trophy for
most improved beginner girl
was presented to Kathy Oat -
man. The Bob McCrabb
Trophy for most improved
beginner boy was presented
to Shane Oatman. The
Marion Mills Trophy for
most improved intermediate
or senior skater was
presented to Melissa Hruden
and Sonya McCallum. A gold
medal. was .presented to
Melissa Purser and Roxanne
Warr for most improved
Precision Team members.
During the weekend of
March 18, 19, some of the
Goderich skaters took part
in the Sarnia Skating Com-
petition. Devin Horton won a
gold medal and a trophy in
the Fere-JuGvenile `B" Men.
John Hruden won. a bronze. -
medal in Pre -Juvenile "A"
Men for third place. Lisa
Fisher won a silver medal in
the Jazz category for Inter-
pretive ladies. Susan Cook
won a bronze medal in the
Top Ten Interpretive Ladies
category. Aveleigh Cook won
a bronze medal in Novice
"B" Ladies.

peared that the first period was going to
end in a 1-0 score but. at the 2:42 mark,
Vicky Vanderburgh took a pass from
Marianne Glazier and scored the tying
goal.
Less than one minute later, Stacey Rean
scored for Goderich to give her team the
lead. Rean was assisted by Debbie O'Brien
and Angie Chisholm. Then with 17 seconds
left in the period, O'Brien passed the ring
to Vanderburgh who scored giving
Goderich a 3-1 advantage.
The second period saw Goderich's lead
disappear as Listowel scored three quick
goals. However, Rean, who was assisted
by Chisholm, scored the tying goal and
then Katharine Murphy scored for
Goderich giving them the lead with only
1:40 Left in the period. Although it looked as
if Goderich had the game wrapped u ,
Listowel scored again with 49 seconds left
on the clock and the, goal forced the game
into overtime.
During the first six minutes of overtime,
both teams played their hardest but at the
9:05 mark Rean took a pass from Van-
derburgh and the goal gave Goderich the
championship.

pionship Goderich Lions team include:

Complex in Toronto on th.e weekend, There
were well over 1400 cam titers from all
partof the province. and Viking athletes
did exceptionally well.
Joe Melady won the gold medal in tile
Junior Boys' Shot Put with a put of 13.58
metres: or about 44.5 feet.
In. the 60metre sprints"because of the
large number of competitors in each event
.(60-100) the organizers ran heats, semi-
finals and finals in this elite event. If an .
athlete qualified for the semi-finals in his
orher•event, it was an achievement!
Kim'Fritzley and Joanne Campbell both
placed fifth in the finals of the Junior Girls
and" Midget Girls 60 metre sprint respec-
ly, Kiln placed third in the Junior

Girls' heat and second in the semi-final
before posting a personal best time of 7.7
seconds in the final. Joanne placed second
in her Midget girls heat, second in the
semifinal 'and posted an excellent 7.9 se-
cond timein the final.

Junior Boys' 60 metre heats and pasted a

semis -final.
Deb Mitchelmore placed 1th in the
Senior Girls' 600 metre tha with a time of
2:30.7
Kevin Talbot plaeet 20iii in the Midget
Boyo 00 metres with a personal best time
of 58.4 seconds,
Shawn Doherty and Shawn Rohbek both
placed third in the Junior Boys" 50 metre
hurdle heats but failed to advance. Rich
Geddes placed fifth in the junior boys' 60
metre sprint.
This meet.was a highly successful con-
clusion to the first indoor track season. at
G.D.C.I.
On. April 20 and 21 the, G.D.C.I. track
team will participate in the Westminster
Wildcat Invitational Meet in London. The
team will also participate in meets in Lon-
don at Medway Secondary School and the
Forest City Meet, April 30.
The Huron -Perth track and field cham-
pionships will be held at G.D.C.I. for the
first time May 10 and 11.
Atoms win championship........

The championship game Saturday was
every bit as exciting and left a capacity
crowd buzzing. In this game, the roles
were reversed as Goderich jumped into a
2-0 first period lead and then had to score
late in the final period to win 4-3.
Goals by Tim Harrison and Andre
Cauchi within a minute span midway
through the first period boosted Goderich
into a 2-0 lead. Amherstburg cut the
Goderich lead to a single goal early in the
second period but Brian Lane's goal at 4.20
of the second period restored the Atom's
two -goal lead.
Amherstburg again pulled to within a
single goal on Broderick's goal at 5.20 -of
the second period and midway through the
third period Mike Scanlan scored on an
unassisted effort to tie the game 3-3.
Goderich clinched the provincial
championship on a goal by Jeff Hodges
with Shawn Talbot assisting " with just five
minutes remaining in the game.
The members of the championship team
include Mark Kinihan, Pat Donnelly,
Richard Bowman, Aaron Duckworth, Tiin
Harrison, Chris O'Neil, Jeff Hodges,
Andre Cauchi Shawn Talbot, Brian Lane,
Justin Fagan, Ryan Fagan, Sean O'Brien,
Jason Pearson, Lonnie Rumig, Jean Paul
Cauchi and Chris Erb. The team was
coached Steve Buchanan and managed by
Scott Pearson.

OMHA championship.
