GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13, 1683
SECOND SECTION
Machinist' Atoms
The Goderich Machinist Atoms are the
Ontario Minor Hockey Association A
division provincial champions.
After a drought of several years, the
Goderich Atoms brought home another
provincial championship banner,.
defeating Amherstburg 3-1 in the best -of -
five championship series here on the
weekend.
The Machinist Atoms become the first
team to win a provincial championship.
since the Green and Parent Midgets
defeated Camp Borden in 1979. While other
teams have enjoyed modest success in
post season play, few have even reached
the finals of the provincial playdowns.
The Atoms, however, are one of the best
minor teams to come along, and their
season successes reflects a good blend of
talent, discipline and hard work.
The team gave every .indication from
early in the season that it would be a power
in the atom division and Amherstburg
learned that lesson early in the series.
To suggest that the two finalists were
evenly matched is an understand as
evidenced by the fact that only one goal
separated the two teams at the end of the
four -game series. One goal provided the
margin of victory for Goderich in the final
two games and only one goal separated the
teams in the four -game goal total. It was
that close.
Goderich took the early lead in the series
winning the first game 7-4 in Amherstburg.
The home team wasn't about to relinquish
a two -game deficit and decidedly won the
second game of the series 9-5, scoring four
goals in the final period.
A split on the road was an achievement
for Goderich and they headed home for the
final three games, if neccessary, at home
on the weekend.
The pivotal game of the series, for both
clubs, was the third game Friday and it
wasn't decided until late in the final period
when Chris O'Neil scored to break a 2-2 tie
and lift the Atoms to a 3-2 win. The victory
was an important one in that Goderich now
only needed a split in the final two games
at home to win the provincial cham-
pionship.
They clinched the title here Saturday
with a 4-3 win in another exciting game.
before a capacity crowd.
