Board approves m
By Stephanie Levesque
Approval in principle has been given to phasing in
increased instruction tiMe e in Core French by the
Huron County Board of Education.
The phase-in time frame outlined to the board at its
Aprils meeting may have the Core French program
in Grade Seven increased to 40 minutes per day from
20 minutes effective September 1984 and the same
time increase for Grade Eight effective September
1985.
"Does that mean we'll be hiring more French
teachers?" asked Exeter area trustee Clarence
McDonald.

Superintendent of program Robert McCall said ad-
ditional teachers will be considered when the'''pro-
gram is ' phased -in. Director of eduction` John
Cochrane added that any additional hirings would be
considered for the 1984 budget.
Trustee John Elliott questioned the need to approve
the increase at this time and suggested approval in
principle be given now and the increase be con-
sidered again next year.
"Do you have any specific areas of concern?"
trust0ele Joan Van den Broeck asked Mr. Elliott.
"I have concern for staffing," responded Mr.
Elliott adding that approval in principle gives. the

Trustee MurrayMuivey had another -concern.
"If the students are having 20 minutes more per
day, is there any subject being -shortened?" he asked.
Mr: McCall said the increased French time falls
within the time allocated for language arts. The time
allocated for language arts, added Mr. McCall, is
already above the time required.
"The increase wouldn't significantly harm the time
allocated to language arts," said Mr. McCall.
In the education committee report, Mrs. Van den
Broeck outlined several reasons for increasing the
time for the Core French program. The reasons in-
clude:
- The Ministry of Education's minimum require-
ment for Core French in Grades Seven and Eight is 60
to 120 hours per year;
- Effective September 1984 students will be re-
quired to take a credit in Core French at the secon-
dary level in order to graduate;
