to provide as Well as the thoroughness,"' Walker
explained. .
He said that the hospital's in-patient physiotherapy
was greatly improved. • • , . .
"This, at times, is a very great demand for the
physiotherapist because of our increased use of chest
physiotherapy, stroke • rehabilitation and ' post-
operative physiotherapy. This is one area that cer-
tainly
ertainly will grow in future with improvements in our
rehabilitation potential."
Walker said that he felt the hospital`s
physiotherapy department was "doing the utmost,
their very best with what they've got.'.'. He said the
department's: problem was just a problem of trends
which at times creates a great demand for treatment
which in turn can result ht a waiting listwith the
physiotherapy department"priorizing problems".
"In summary," Walker told the .hospital- board;
"we have a very) forward looking deperbnenr which
is improving all the time and feet that this is the
impression- that we should.. be : leaving with the
community. At times there will be'a waiting list as
demand fluctuates as we are well- aware of the
fluctuations in our bed situation at the hospital."
'Recent reports in this newspaper regarding the
level of :service provided by the physiotherapy
department at Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital have "led to some negative feelings" in the
community, Dr: David Walker, Chief of the Medical
Staff has told the hospital board.
It had been reported that the physiotherapy
department was having difficulty in up with
its • heavy„ workload which in turn was resulting: in
waiting lists. •
"On the one hand, I think the community ap-
preciates difficulties with waiting lists at; times. On
.the other hand, such reporting . has led to some
negative feelings also regarding ' physiotherapy,"
Walker told the board '
He . said he felt it was only, fair to -record that the
hospital's physiotherapy has improved dramatically
in the past year with .the acquisition of new equipment
and the enlargement of facilities.. • • ' .
"As well as the physical changes we -have had, we
have added staff and expertise and are now providing
a much improved service to the commtnity. The
level of care that we are giving people has improved
because of the greater range of treatment wee are able.

curred before such changes in policy. It is sad that
you chose to ignore the profession before making
such decisions," theletter reads.
The letter also says that when considering treat-
'
reat' ments for. WCB,cases, the physician should be free of
any rigid protocol; as to where certain treatments can
be carried out. "The attending physician or surgeon
is in the best position to decide which treatment
should be carried out where, and in no way should he
be handicapped by bureaucratic dogma which is rigid
and does not lend itself to the individual cir-
cumstances of each case."
In conclusion, the letter states, "In this respect,
your recent actions can be seen as a further step in

discussions occur between such interested bodies as
the O.M.A. and the Ontario Hospitals' Association."
The Goderich hospital board agreed t0 also write a
letter to the Ontario Hospitals' Association about the
WCB guidelines. "I think it's a flag raising issue,"
board member Bob Dempsey stated.
Hospital administrator Elmer Taylor said AM&G
