by first round of WOSSA
BY TD , , •
The GDCI junior Vikings were the only
Huron -Perth team to get by the first round
of the boys' WOSSA basketball cham-
pionships played here last Friday and
Saturday.
The Vikings won their opening round
game Friday in Exeter, defeating Aylmer
East Elgin Eagles. 64a14...This_ victory...put._
the Vikings into the semi-finals Saturday
in Goderich but they lost that.game 65-53 to
Sarnia St. Pats. St. Pats lost in the finals
43-41 to their cross-town rivals, Sarnia St.
Clair in double overtime.
Peter Conlon, with 19 points and John
Thompson with 18, led the Vikings aginst
East Elgin. The Aylmer team led,27-25 at
half-time, but the Vikings went to a half
court press in the third quarter which
seemed to totally confuse the Eagles.
Thompson and Conlon picked off bad
passes and caused turnovers which they
converted into easy layups. Dave Almasi
was also a tower of strength for the
Vikings, pulling down rebounds and
`Np
blocking shots in what was his best game
of the season.
Shawn Rahbek had nine points for
Goderich, Almasi got seven. Darryl Black
hooped six, Kevin Feagan had three and
Andrew Carruthers got two' points.
The Vikings played well against St. Pats,
trailing by only three points, 31-28 at half-
time, The_ difference in thetwo teams
turned out to beia foul -shooting. At one
point in the third quarter, the Vikings
trailing by six points, had six foul shots
that failed to go in before St. Pats scored to
go ahead by eight. n
Dave Almasi led the Vikings with 15
points. Pete Conlon, John Thompson and
Darryl Black had nine apiece and Shawn
Rahbek, who shot well, had 11 points.
Coach Lynn Meyers felt his team played
inspired basketball in the WOSSA tour-
nament and felt it was a fine way to end a
good season for the Vikings. Only Almasi
and Black will be returning to the junior
Vikings as the rest move up to senior play
next season.

Juveniles drop deciding
game of quarter -final
Signal -Star juvenile coach Doug
Cruickshank was the first person to admit
his team was a late starter. And it may
have cost them dearly Sunday as they
dropped the deciding game of the quarter
final series 6-2 to Petrolia.
The teams were tied at one game apiece
heading into the third and deciding game
of the best -of -three OMHA quarter final
series Sunday, but the game and series,
was pretty much decided in the first period
of play:
The Stars were on top of Petrolia for the
first three minutes., of the game but their
effort failed to prodcue a goal. ' Petrolia
took charge after that scoring five straight
goals in an eight -minute span to carry a 5-0
lead into the second period.
Richard Helps scored two goals for
Petrolia while Doug McGregor, Ken
Randall and Terry O'Hara scored one goal
apiece for Petrolia.
Despite the slow start in the final game,
Cruickshank was pleased with the team's
effort over the season and in the final
series.
"I think we set up two of their goals in
the first period and we should have been
blown .opt in the second period because we
were slow out of the gate again," he said:
"I'm not offering any alibis: It was a good
series and they could take it all."
The Stars didn't get blown out .01 the
game in the second period but emerged.
unscathed and managed to produce -the
only goal of the period. Phil Wood scored
the first Goderich goal, convertiing a.pass
from team-mates Keith Hallam and Dave
McDonald.
The Stars got back in the game in the
third period on a goal by Jeff Sargent after
six minutes of play with Wood and Dave
Gallow assisting. However, Petrolia put
any visions of a comeback to rest with its
sixth goal 30 seconds later to put the game
away.
The loss eliminates the Stars from
further play this season. Coached by
Cruickshank, Bruce Crew and Gary
Abbott, the team includes members;
Dennis Kerr, Randy Gaynor, Pat Bissett,
Phil Wood, Dave McDonald, Mark
Crawford, Jeff Sargent, Dave Gallow, Del
Bedard, Scott Stoll, Andrew Telford, Keith
Hallam, Jeff Feagan, John Peters, Paul
