The; Goderich Legion Midgets were
elimina 1. Ontario Minor Hockey
Associiutiun. (pl it playoffs: by Strathroy
last Weekend, but they put up a valiant
struggle.
Friday night, the Legionnaires played
probably their best game of the year when
they defeated Strathroy 4-1. The win put
Goderich back in the series, trailing 2-1 in
the best -off -five playoff, but Saturday, in
Strathroy, the Legionnaires ran out of gas
in the third period and lost the deciding
game of the series, 5-3.
Goderich held a 2-1 lead in the second
period but a last-minute goal by, Strathroy
sent the teams into the final period tied 2-2.
The Legionnaires were outscored 3-1 in
that period, finding the effects of the
gruelling backPto-back games and some
questionable refereeing a little more than
they could handle.
There was Tattle doubt here Friday as to
which was the better team that night. The
Legionnaires played inspired hockey and
pressured Strathroy into mistakes in both
ends of the rink.
"Everybody did his job," said coach
Dick Madge, who handled the team in the
absence of Larry Jeffrey, "Every line we
put out there checked well and carried the
play. The defence was outstanding and
goalie Te. Bean was as 3te

Chris Sideris who was up from the Ban-
tams and played a strong game, drew
assists on the play. Goderieh grabbed a 2.0
lead with less than two minutes left in the
period when winger Doug Smith scored on
a play with Daryl Madge and Brent
Williamson.
Strathroy got one back just 37 seconds
into the second period off the stick of Jim
Vanderheyden, but the Goderich boys
delighted the large hometown crowd on
hand by scoring three more before the
period ended. Trevor Erb, in his first game
back since a knee injury, pulled the trigger
on both of them. Daryl Madge and Peter
Willems assisted on the first one and
Willems and John Thompson helped set up
the other.
The action was fast and furious in the
scoreless third period as both teams ran
into a rash of minor penalties, but
Goderich was able to check the usually
potent Strathroy attack to a standstill.
In Strathroy the next afternoon, the
Legionnaires started out as though they
were going to continue their domination of

by the work of the officials.
"When, ,ourlayers come back to the
complaining benchc l F that the referes eare
swearing and ridiculing them, it gets
pretty hard to keep their minds on the
game," commented Madge. "We teach
our kids to have respect for officials, but
something like this makes it very dif-
ficult."
The Legionnaires have two tournaments
coming up in March. Sunday, March 6, -
they will take part in the, Shamrock
League Midget 'A' championship tour-
