Marr ) Juveniles need overtime goals against Strathroy The Goderich Signal -Star Juveniles learned •that a team's season performance doesn't *mean much in the playoffs. The Stars opened their best -of -five Ontario Minor Hockey Association playoffs here Sunday against StrathrOy, a team they 'handily beat twice during the Shamrock League schedule. And the Stars looked like easy winners again Sunday building a 4-0 lead by the end of the first period. But the Stars took foolish and costly penalties and needed a goal in the final 30 seconds of the final period to tie the game and two overtime goals to finally defeat Strathroy 7-5. The win moves Goderich into a one - game lead in the best -of -five series and the second game of the series was played in Strathroy Tuesday. The third game is scheduled for Tuesday, February 15 in Strathroy , If a fourth game is necessary, it will be played in Goderich Sunday, February 20 at 2.30 p.m. The game looked like it belonged to the Stars from the start as they scored in the first minute of play and led 4-0 at the close of the first period. Jeff Sargent, John • Peters, Dave Gallow and Dave McDonald each scored for Goderich. Things turned around in the second , period as God,erich took needless penalties and gave up three goals to Strathroy: The 'lead had dwindled' to 4-3 as the teams • headed into the final period. Strathroy kept the pressure on• in the final period and scored two more goals to • take 5-4 lead with 1.15 remaining in regulation time. The third period had started as a 20 • minute period but due to the playoff contract, the period was reduced to a 15 minute period which left just 24 seconds remaining in the game. Undaunted, Goderich pulled its goaltender and Sargent scored the tying goal with just a handful of seconds remaining in regulation time to force the overtime. Goderich clinched the win scoring two goals in the 10 -minute overtime period. Phil Wood scored the game -winning goal three minutes into overtime with Sargent assisting. McDonald added an insurance marker latein the overtime with Paul )MpCartney assisting on the play. Despite the fact the game was -en- tertaining, coach Doug Cruickshank said the loft minutes in minor penalties detracted from the flow of play. Due to the 54 minutes assessed Strthroy and 46 penalty minutes assessed Goderich, both coaches will be suspended for game two of the series. •Bantams lose first OMHA playoff game here 8-3 BY CB The Goderich Elevator Baitams began their OMHA playoffs against Strathroy here on Saturday in a three out of five series with Strathroy winning the flip for the extra game. The locals lost thegame 8-3. However, thiswas the best showing they made against Strathroy all season. Strathroy is a very strong and disciplined team and previous encounters with them have resulted in losses of 8-1, 9-2 and 9-3. In the first period, the local Bantams skated stride for stride and it wasn't until the 3:01 mark that Strathroy scored on a power play while Chris Sideris was serving a minor penalty. Strathroy added a second goal at the 2:32 mark and the period ended at 2-0. In the second period, Goderich continued to play strongly but Strathroy added two more goals at the 8:34 and 4:38 marks. At the 4:11 mark, Bruce Parent passed the puck out to Jim Beattie who fired it at the Strathroy net. The puck struck a Strathroy defenceman and deflected into the net, putting Goderich‘ on the scoreboard. However, at the 1:46 mark, Strathroy scored their fifth goal and led 5-1. The third period had barely begun when Strathroy scored at the 14:28 mark and again at the 8:27 mark. Goderich came back with two quick goals, one at the 5!48 mark by Darren Doack assisted by Chris Sideris and Kevin Telford, and the second at the 5:30 mark by Chris Sideris assisted by Kevin Talbot. Strathroy struck again at the 3:51 mark to complete the scoring for the game. Despite thscore, Todd Wilson played an outstanding game in the Goderich net. • Again penalties played an important part as Goderich drew 10 to Strathroy's 7. Next Saturday the boys travel to 5 Strathroy for the second game and they are wished success. Last Thursday evening, the local Bantams hosted their rivals from Parkhill., This was the fourth encounter for these teams this season. Although the outcome was the same; as Parkhill defeated the locals 5-4, the f4rIs were treated to a better ". exhibition of -hockey by a much improved Goderich team. One of the improvements most noticeable was a decrease in the number of pendlties. Goderich only drew four penalties in the entire game. Todd Gilchrist never received one penalty as his contribution to the improvement. Kevin Telford was trying to do his part as well as he reduced his penalties to two. • ,Darren Doak was back in the line up after his four game vacation, but seemed to lack his usual momentum. Chris Sideris made his usual contribution as he scored, two goals and had two assists. Likewise, Kevin Talliot scored twice and had one assist. Jason O'Neill had two assists. Dave Telford played a strong game on defence as he outwitted the opposition on numerous occasions. In the third period, it looked like Darcy McGee might have scored as he stickhandled around a couple of Parkhill players and appeared to have a break- away. Unfortunately for Darcy, a swift footed Parkhill player caught up to him and checked him, sending his stick flying through the air. A second improvement was in the way the boys passed the puck around, something the coaches have been trying to impress on them all season and very necessary if they hope to give Strathroy a "run for their money" in the rest of their OMHA playoff games. The Was junior ringette team defeated the pee wee boys' lifoiseieeg0e hockey WWI 9.0 in a game of ringette recently. Tammy Talbot scored three goals, Stacey Reel, scored two goals and Angie Chisholm, Katherine Seniors win 16-3 The Goderich Optimists senior girls' ringette team trounced Mitchell 16-3 Sunday. Allison Graham opened the scoring for Goderich and went on to score four more goals. Angie Alcock had a hat -trick and assisted on four goals. Lisa Kisch also had a hat -trick and two assists. And Tammy Gibbons had a hat -trick and assisted on one goal. Tracey Wilson had one goal and one assist. And Terrilyn Fisher had one goal. Leslie Rean had three • assists and Becky Morris had one. Lori McCartney played in net or Goderich. Chess Club news John George edged into first place in level 1 with his win over Louis Stadelmann. Mark Maurer increased his level 2 average with two wins. A close race is shaping up in level 3 with the five players separated by .038 percent of each other. New member Eric Hallam was undefeated for the even- ing with one win and two draws. Tom Kelly and Doug Brindley played to a draw. Mike Cox picked up one win, he has been slowly mov- ing up the ranks. Mike now is challenging George Barwick for most improved player. ,1111111111111111111•111111111111M\ .• 7.t --=J. • • 0:11,j. .6 \ -; 7. 1 # NI,- • c'k If you're NEW IN TOWN and don't know which way to turn, call the efonAcig hostess at 524-7165 You'll be grOZI you did tj 1ViArPhy, Vicky Vanderburg') 0..11d Mary Michelle oterrissey each scored singles.
